Of the many quotes over the years to try to explain but I like this from a correspondent at Tarawa.

“The Marines fought almost solely on esprit de corps, I was certain. It was inconceivable to most Marines that they should let another Marine down, or that they could be responsible for dimming the bright reputation of their Corps. The Marines simply assumed that they were the world’s best fighting men.”

OK, that's the best one yet.

Right after I retired in '99, I had a shirt with the picture of a Marine in full battle dress with the caption that read "When it absolutely, positively has to be destroyed overnight...US Marines.

And others who served.

Coasties are crazy.

I read a story about a Coastie radioman at sea for the first time in a heavy gale. He asked a fellow radio operator what is the mayday procedure if the storm gets worse and they need rescue. The Chief overheard the and put his hand on the young man's shoulder. He says, "Son, we are the rescue."

For non-Marines:
Be aware that Marines bitch constantly about the Corps.
We earned the right.
But... never denigrate the Corps in front of the Marine who was just bitching.
