Oklahoma Gov. Kevin Stitt, who was reelected yesterday, recently dedicated "every square inch" of the state to Jesus: "[With] the authority that I have as governor, and the spiritual authority and the physical authority that you give me, I claim Oklahoma for you."

I don't think we can with the current SCOTUS.

Religions seem to have an easy go of it right now. Time to turn up the heat!

If he starts making policies that require something from that thought, that's a different story. What that "something" is will define fighting back against it.

(6,081 posts)One obvious benefit: in a country with no Separation, if you want to worship in a way not approved by the sect anointed by the political establishment, you're kind of screwed.
Not to point fingers, but there's one denomination that has centuries of experience working hand-in-hand with established governments and getting special benefits from them and they're really good at it. It ain't the Southern Baptists.

(3,417 posts)When ignorant hucksters hold up the writings of bronze age nomadic herdsmen who didn't know where the sun went at night as the exclusive basis for morality, law, and science, I get furious.
There are some human lessons in the Bible that are worth understanding. Thomas Jefferson famously used a razor blade to cut and paste a version that left out the superstition and supernatural while leaving those lessons.
Let the record show that this athiest does not recognize the sovereignty of any diety or prophet over Oklahoma or ANY place on this planet.

Civil society doesn't work if parents and churches can brainwash their kids into being armies for Christ instead of citizens of the US.

When he takes concrete steps to carry out what he is yakking about, then there is a case to be made.

(90,777 posts)Made them feel like they belong. Made them feel like citizens of the state; entitled to the full protection of law.
Because if there is anything a Jewish or Muslim person, or atheist, etc., wants to hear, it is the governor of their state declaring that the state they live in is claimed for Jesus (Christians).
Words matter.
