Please tell me what Im missing here. What are we doing next? Putting patients in charge of their own surgeries? Clients in charge of their own trials? When did we stop trusting experts. This is so stupid.

But I guess they see things differently.
Pain & suffering is how they have "fun," I suppose.

(10,030 posts)right-wing Christian schools that are heavy on the Bible and light on real education. I have a young relative who went to such a school through Grade 8. She was ill prepared for public high school and could not achieve the grades that would allow her to get admitted to the college of her choice. Shes a bright girl, just poorly educated during those so-important early years. She could not even have a gift of a Harry Potter book because it was against the Bible.

(16,750 posts)peak in the 1920's. McCarthy, John Birch Soc., and so many others all contributed to what we see today. This is just the most recent rendition of hate and ugliness. We could be so much better but they remain an anchor to deny anything decent and good, and enrich themselves. Pathetic.

(16,750 posts)Quite disgusting as "they" seem to want to undermine any advances in racial/ socio-economic equality, environmental protection, health care, child care, worker safety, etc. Ironically Nixon passed CAA, CWA, Superfund, OSHA all of which would get zero support today, so the war continues.
Hope you have a good night.

(2,038 posts)governments spend a year on public education? And just think the mega churches and corporations can't get their hands on it. We must privatize it all! Give parents the choice of being driven to "our" great school with you tax voucher.
This has been their plan for decades. Drive up the negatives about public schools and push their "answer" to the non existent problem.
As always, follow the money!

(3,581 posts)The parents who raised a fuss about CRT and certain books couldn't stand staying home during covid to make sure their kids got to every Zoom class on time. They hated being around their kids 24/7 to help them with their classwork and homework. Those anti-mask/anti-vax troglodytes couldn't have been clearer about wanting little Sophia and Tyler to return to school. So go on, educators, challenge these selfish cretins to pull their kids from school. The only families that will even consider doing it are the ones that could afford a private education or those quiver fools who would choose their homeschool biology curriculum based on Jesus riding dinosaurs.
Seriously, fuck these parents. They have neither the stones nor patience to be educators.

(46,750 posts)I don't even know how to do the new math. Is that anything like the fast math system that they use in India?
The one thing I expected from Public school was to expose my kids to a diverse population. I didn't get that when I went to private Catholic school nor when I went to private school for college.

(2,771 posts)1. Billionaires like Bill Gates, the late Eli Broad, Laurene Powell Jobs and others became interested in education as their cause celebre. Im sure some of them hoped to use their money to improve US education. Some, however, see it as a money-making endeavor. Few, if any, have studied education. Many have attended and sent their children to private schools and dont even have experience of being a public school student, parent or educator. They suspiciously eye the money they pay in taxes and note the large sums spent on education. Dollars inspire their opinions. They are not to be trusted with public education but they do have Republicans in their pockets.
2. Teachers in the US do not receive respect as trained professionals. They sure as heck are though. Some members of the public would do well to respect the profession more.
3. Anyone here who is interested in teaching and public education probably would like reading Diane Ravitch. She was trained at Columbia, was a high-profile educator and published books I used as resources. She was a member of the George H W Bush administration because as charters and other public school alternatives began to gain traction she was interested in them. That stopped as she recognized their many shortcomings. She blogs and shines a light on the graft and false claims made by many failing for-profit educational endeavors. She also values what we do. I think right now her latest blog entry is about Boebert, not on an education-based topic. I recommend her. A link is below.

(8,771 posts)I am old enough to remember all the hell being raised, Especially from MAGAs, about schools being closed during Covid. They realized teaching classes is hard as hell, and most of the parents are too illiterate to comprehend the subject matter. Plus many parents wanted that time away from their little assholes And loved day care being free. Most will never afford private schools and many of the poor and minority kids would not be allowed into private Jeeeebus schools.

If parents want to be in charge of anything about their kids, start at home by teaching them manners and respect and how to think critically for themselves. Then teach them about basic civics...that is, if you know and understand it yoursel
