Even though we have a Dem governor, we just lost the state supreme court. Gerrymandering, voting and abortion rights are on their agenda. State legislature is red, just shy of a supermajority, which is our good news.

Both GA and NC have large pockets of Dem voters, making them appear purple. And both need more.
More voters, more turnout!

(I've decided NC is masquerading as purple, but is really red at the core. GA is fighting to become purple, but there's just as much red core there, and more in other parts of the south, where they don't try to hide it.)

It’s a purple state with a state Dem party that is weak, and a state GOP that is extremely strong. The Koch Bros and Art Pope have assured that.

of conservative boomer retirees with their sweet blue state pensions, old south local yocals, and second generation Cuban Americans that tipped the state red. When the basic economy of the state is based on filling in wet lands to pop of stucco homes you have a problem.

If Florida had voted blue they would be saying that Hurrican Nicole was God's anger about it. I don't know if they can't figure out that they vote against their own future or if they just don't care.

And i am not talking about the poor folks who lost their primary homes. i am talking about the wealthy 60+ who flee to FL in the winter and move back to sane, livable places in blue states. After losing property in FL, a lot have come north and bought up most of the new homes and condos so that working folks can' t find affordable housing. Before most condos in this area have ground broken they are sold out to speculators who make the starting prices out of reach to working men and women...no matter how cheaply built these new homes and condos are.

blue.

Why would I want to move to some red-state hellhole?

Here in Washington State, I have an intelligent, hard-working, compassionate progressive governor, Jay Inslee. I have eye-poppingly beautiful environs, with the snow-capped Cascades in the East and the snow-capped Olympic Mountains in the West. We have plenty of fresh water, delicious produce, apples and potatoes not being the least of these.

I can attend high-quality arts programs any time I want; the opera, the ballet, the symphony, professional and community theater, First Nations cultural presentations, cuisines from nearly every culture and nationality in the world, staggering ethnic diversity.

I'm not much of an outdoorsman, but we've got outdoor activities and opportunities that toxic slag-heap red states can only dream of: hiking, cycling, kayaking, fishing, hunting, mountain climbing, camping, bird-watching, whale-watching, etc. etc.

Seattle may no longer be the rock music mecca it was in the 90's, but there are still terrific local acts to be seen on almost any given night at the Showbox, The Triple Door, The Nectar Lounge, The Croc in Belltown, the Tractor Tavern, and so on.

I'm not going to move to some red-state nightmare in order to move the needle toward Blue in the most infinitesimal way.

You say you have eye-popping beautiful environs, with the snow-capped Cascades in the East and the snow-capped Olympic Mountains in the West. And plenty of fresh water. The Repubs have been selling off national parks for oil drilling, mining you name it. Protecting these things would be my first concern. People who have a choice to stay or move could be a big help.

But if the repukes try to go through with it at the Federal level, I'm far from the only person who'd like to take California and Oregon by the hand, and bounce from the U.S. in the form of the Republic of Cascadia. The righties threaten all the time to secede from the U.S., as if we wouldn't all be better off without their useless asses and useless states dragging us down.

Two can play at that game. And we can better protect the things you mentioned staying right here in the Blue States where they are appreciated the most.

I think one of our problems is that liberals are now highly concentrated in a few cities in a few states.

That limits our power due to the way the Senate works and the Electoral College. It also makes it easy to gerrymander around us for House districts.

We could probably do a lot better with some smart redistribution. Move excessive liberals out of some states. Maybe abandon solidly Republican states, but some of those are small and wouldn't take that many people to actually change election results.

I think we'd have to set up an organization that would ask for volunteers who are willing and able to move, and then calculate where best to send them based on the number that sign up and from where.
