(19,271 posts)Because the GLOBAL birthrate isn't dropping. We just passed 8 billion, and will hit 9 billion by 2040.
The only countries and individuals worried about falling populations are the ones terrified of letting in immigrants that are of a different race or religion than them.
The problem isn't birthrates, it's racism.

(2,499 posts)He really wanted to say white birth rates, but didn't want to risk having his SpaceX contract with NASA dropped like an Anvil in a coyote & roadrunner cartoon.

(5,184 posts)because the world won't be able to feed 8 billion much longer.
The oceans are about fished past the point of recovery, and once they are, food becomes scarcer, which will be made worse by agriculture being unable to catch up due to droughts and floods.

(19,271 posts)Which means it's EVEN STUPIDER to think we need to breed even more humans.

(21,670 posts)Ever since Malthus, people have worried we'd run out of food.
But it's fresh water we'll probably run out of first - and the elites know it.

(10,779 posts)He also doesn't have any qualms about giving a megaphone to someone who advocates violence to accomplish his anti-democratic political ends. Being anti-democratic is Old School Reactionary, and no doubt Musk would prefer plutocratic fascism, maintained by a gang-like kleptocracy like Putin's (which is, after all, Trump's blueprint).

Hitler's version of these "elite thinkers" thought the same about themselves, first off the 100% Aryan "blood" they all claimed to have.

(13,195 posts)And he's not wrong to say he's not conventionally left or right. Anyone who says they are conventionally left or right is wrong. Left/right is a dumb, shorthand, primitive number line analogy we foolishly didn't refuse to inherit from our ancestors. People live and think in multiple dimensions. Not being conventionally right or left doesn't make you fascist or anything else.

(9,120 posts)I'm not sure the word has any meaning anymore beyond, "Political opponent I dislike or just random person in general I dislike."
It's like "alt-right". Remember that one? People learned a new vocabulary term, and suddenly it was everywhere. Everyone who so much as annoyed the Twitter-dwellers were suddenly deemed "alt-right". I swear my cats were alt-right. Only alt-right creatures would mess with my rugs like that.
That disappeared as quickly as it appeared, and has almost entirely been replaced by fascist.
It's always strange to me how these vocabulary words get handed down from social media, and then suddenly they're just everywhere. Doesn't matter if they apply - they will be made to fit to apply as clumsily and ahistorically as possible.
All it really does is signal to me, "I don't really read books and get most of my information from what other people are saying on the internet."
Which is kind of the problem. As much as I enjoy the back-of-the-cereal-box understanding of fascism and history, it's very cringe. It's like advertising, "I've never read a history book in my life!"
Musk isn't a fascist. He's an egotistical contrarian who enjoys trolling people for validation with the added spice of a decent sycophantic following. He doesn't think far in advance when he runs his mouth. It's what slaps at someone in the moment. Mussolini he ain't. He literally bought Twitter to pettily fuck with people on Twitter. He is 100% succeeding in that part. (The making money part much less so). All the outrage and articles and endless attention is by his design, and people are happily walking into the shit hole he dug for them. He wanted this and he's getting it because the media and social media addicts simply cannot help themselves.
I'm enjoying the hell out of it. But no one is looking intelligent in any of it. All it's doing is proving that Twitter was the trash fire long suspected and a problem in our media culture. People literally can't look away as Musk pisses away billions to troll people.
And this is how people have spent a month where *checks* we had a major election while passing 8 billion people and a continuing war in Ukraine. And no, people often can't walk and chew gum at the same time. Media oxygen is a finite resource. People at large can only pay attention to so much at once.
And too many looked out at the world and went, "I'm gonna talk about Twitter a lot. Like, a lot."
Americans always live up to their own stereotypes. I will give us that.

(14,176 posts)He does have a lot of political sway with his business and personal wealth, and now, can help to promote a lot of fascist rhetoric and propaganda with his platform.
One can say he is a big promoter of Fascism without saying he is a Fascist himself.
Do I think he'd both welcome and help promote a future Fascist government? Undoubtedly. But so far he hasn't expressed any interest in entering the political arena as a candidate.
But if he ever did......shudder.....he'd be Trump on steroids. And a true Fascist.

(9,120 posts)I honestly don't think he thinks that far ahead.
All he knows is the Left hates him right now, so he's going to lash out and troll the Left. That is the sum total.
Whether or not it changes the government in a profound way or damages our institutions is totally immaterial to him. Those considerations aren't within his attention bubble. It's just, "Who can I give a middle finger to today and snicker about it with my sycophants after?"
I think when you reach that level of wealth, there's a certain immunity. Whatever happens elsewhere, it doesn't really affect him (or at least he thinks it doesn't). And once freed from the consideration of consequences for actions, a person will kind of just do whatever impulse alights on them at the time.
He's a very impulsive man. He just says shit in the moment. That's why I think trying to assign some grand ideological scheme to him doesn't really work. It says more about the person doing the assigning and how they order the world in their minds. He's a kid with ants and a magnifying glass.
It doesn't really matter what people say about him, because he just thinks it's all funny.

(1,292 posts)might not be accurate. Possibly closer to the truth is that he is again another sociopathic narcissistic sadist type. A complex set of illnesses amplified with the help of billions of dollars.
He is unable to give a shit. And that makes him dangerous.
