(8,348 posts)When Notre Dame was burning in Paris, my co-workers were watching people run into the burning building to save artifacts. The only reason to run into a burning building is to save a human life. People running in put themselve in the position that others may have to try to rescue them.

(8,348 posts)I will go and save you, but not your stuff no matter how valuable. Once you decide to save your stuff, I am put into the position to save you. You may not be able to replace the Mona Lisa, but there is always another piece of artwork that can be enjoyed, maybe not the same but can be enjoyed. Try as we may, we can not replace a human life.

But some "things" will live forever, to be enjoyed and studied by future generations.
