Hate to use wikipedia. But there are many articles on this legend. most of them say something different.

(5,125 posts)And I, for one, in the spirit of reparations due say that until proven otherwise, The Cherokee seem like a valid origination point.
Although Indigenous peoples can be fierce warriors, there is a lot of focus on living in peace with the World and people living there in their cultures. Even with the horrendous indignities they have endured, it still is their hope and goal.
AND the Wiki check brought me to a great site with actual valid Indigenous lore and creative works.
