A momentous breakthrough in the fight against cancer may be on the horizonand the pandemic nightmare helped scientists get there.

The novel coronavirus could help us cure cancer. Well, certain cancers.
The COVID pandemic gave the pharmaceutical industry the push it needed to finally finish developing messenger-RNA technology so that companies such as Moderna and Pfizer could use the tech for its COVID vaccines.
Now the pharmaceutical industry is using the same mRNA platforms for cancer vaccines. Dozens of these new vaccines are in developmentand experts say theres a chance theyll drive the biggest decrease in cancer mortality in decades.
Its worth noting a key difference between mRNA shots for COVID versus mRNA shots for cancer. MRNA vaccines prevent COVID. They wont prevent cancer. Instead, theyll treat cancer after youve caught it. In that sense, vaccineeven though its the accepted termis something of a misnomer when it comes to mRNA applications for cancer. Therapy might be a better term.

(1,326 posts)5. The Daily Beast article is factually incorrect on one point.
mRNA vaccines do not prevent covid (or acquire in a Covid infection). Rather, they prime ones immune system so that it will recognize the presence of a covid infection, and allow ones immune system to get s head start on fighting the infection.
I wonder if something similar is at play for using this tactic to fight cancer
priming the immune system so it can help fight the cancer infection.
