(61,651 posts)Democrats will begin running better campaigns when we accept what really motivates voters.
As we see, consistency and logic don't matter to a lot of voters, especially the ones the Democrats have lost since the 1980s. These voters are craving something else. Can we adapt our messaging to reach them?

(61,651 posts)Certainly I'm not suggesting that Democrats betray our values. But maybe there's a more effective way to communicate our goals and platform?
What I'm saying is that millions of American voters respond to emotional appeals rather than logic.

(2,993 posts)It's called "physical reality."
Those voters who ignore or deny it - who claim the COVID vaccine is fake, that anthropogenic global warming is a Marxist plot, that homophobia and transphobia are virtues, and so on - aren't entitled to concessions.

(2,993 posts)...that leads to the danger of oversimplification that can be spun by the other side.
"Defund the police" is a good example. The intent behind it was legit, but it ended up backfiring badly on us. (Some of us, myself included, predicted this would be the case.) Take a complex and multifaceted issue, boil it down to an emotional core, and it's just as likely to be counterproductive.
Not saying we shouldn't be linking into emotions - only that this has to be done very carefully, and it's much more easily done when oversimplifications play to base emotions like fight-or-flight responses.

(61,651 posts)I don't know a single Democrat who thought that was a good idea or a good slogan. That slogan came from Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) and was grabbed by the GOP and foisted on us.
That's actually a very good example of what needs to improve. We Democrats need to choose effective messages that are true to our platform and values, and do a better job controlling the message.
Fetterman did an excellent job of this. He used his opponent's weaknesses against him, while neutralizing what could have been fatal issues. We now have a tattooed, hoodie-wearing senator who is recovering from a serious stroke as a senator from Pennsylvania. A lot of people would have said that was impossible. We need to learn from this example.
