Hope Hicks to aide on Jan. 6: 'We all look like domestic terrorists now'

And she was right!

Blog Briefing Room
Hope Hicks to aide on Jan. 6: ‘We all look like domestic terrorists now’
by Jared Gans - 01/02/23 8:11 AM ET

Former White House aide Hope Hicks told a fellow aide in text messages during the Jan. 6, 2021, insurrection that “We all look like domestic terrorists now” as Trump supporters stormed the Capitol.

Texts released by the House select committee investigating that day show Hicks texting with Julie Radford, former chief of staff to Ivanka Trump, as the violence unfolded.

“In one day he ended every future opportunity that doesn’t include speaking engagements at the local proud boys chapter,” Hicks said, apparently referring to former President Trump.

Radford responded “Yup,” seemingly agreeing.

“And all of us that didn’t have jobs lined up will be perpetually unemployed,” Hicks said, also saying she is “so mad and upset,” adding “We all look like domestic terrorists now.”

“Oh yes I’ve been crying for an hour,” Radford replied.

Hicks texted that former White House Director of Strategic Communications Alyssa Farah Griffin, who resigned about a month before the attack, looked like a “genius.”

Had January 6 and the related actions such as denying a normal transition and the preposterous lawsuits not happened, I think she would have been seen as partisan, but nit a pariah. Look at the contrast with Griffin who resigned in early December.

Prior to Trump, the most disgraced President was Nixon. Consider the career of Diane Sawyer, who was in his administration and worked post presidency with him on his autobiography. In spite, or maybe helped by this prominence, she had a long, successful career. There was also Safire, who had a long term column in the NYT Even more prominent consider Henry Kissinger, who was very close to Nixon and then a power in several later administrations.

Not equating GWB and Trump, but many Bush people are not just successful, but many are on MSNBC. I suspect that had Trump accepted defeat, the normal process of rehabilitating any leader to better create our American mythology would have led to those credentials being at least not negative within 5 to 10 years.

Sanders was elected governor, but she still carries the taint of Trump.

The smell will linger regardless of what they go on to do.

As for some of your examples, well, the things that some people choose to forget is telling and it ain't telling anything good.

They thought they would benefit from a Trump presidency both financially and politically.

The two questions Repube's never ask are:

1. Will this help or hurt America's national security?

2. Will this help or hurt Americans making less than $100,000 a year?

Many of them were gone before the crazy "Stop the Steal" plan was formed, because they were out looking for new jobs. Some claimed they were out with Covid, and that may have been true too. But my point is, they KNEW or suspected what Chump was cooking up after the election was lost. They KNEW they wanted no part of it, just as Mike Pence knew.

I've been on DU for long enough to remember when we made fun of Hope on almost a daily basis. But I do give her credit for getting the hell out of the White House and having nothing to do with the attempted coup.

If she had really wanted to be the heroine, she could have blown the whistle beforehand and told the media and the voters what Chump was doing. But that's also true for Mike Pence, Pat Cipollone and others too. They weren't heroes, not by a long shot.

They seek sympathy because they "will never work in this town again".

Just what skills and experience did they bring to Washington to help the American people? They were NEVER serving us! They they were the toadies for the fascists and the office decoration to fulfill Trump's sick fantasies.

They are not entitled to the respect that comes with the education and deep understanding of issues leading to beneficial policy decisions. They were enablers for those wishing to destroy this nation.

They were models, aspiring actresses, and well-connected daughters of the aristocracy that caught Trump's eye. They now cry that their reputations as credible policy operatives have been forever tarnished. They are unaware of how the real world sees them.

No serious President would have put them in such important positions in the first place.

50. Capitol Response Drill
Mon Jan 2, 2023, 01:28 PM
Jan 2023

I know it would be optical BS, but I wish Biden and DC defense forces would do a response drill of what should have happened on Jan 6th. Might be too late now with house turnover pending. If it was done now, GOP would act like it was their idea after taking "control". "Why didn't Pelosi do it?"

The idea is like a fire drill. Sound the alarm. Capitol police pour out of the building with real equipment support and create defend-able perimeters - say maybe top of the steps. Local DC police back them up as soon as possible. An overwhelming number of snipers line the roof line. Then after about 20 minutes, a metric butt load of national guard poor out of the capitol doors, run down the steps with bayonets (doing stabbing motions) and cover the entire grounds. Maybe set up some defense bunkers on the surrounding lawn. The guard could come in waves via the other building connected to the underground network. Buses of NG pull up to something like library of congress, go through tunnels and then exit capitol doors. Back up about 30 patty wagons and do a mock ass dragging of terrorists being trucked off.

While this would surely give away defense tactics, it would also show the domestic terrorists and foreign adversaries what a capitol defense should look like. Deterrent, ya know. It would also be a GREAT contrast for what Trump avoided doing. We should have done it on the 1st anniversary of Jan. 6th. Trump would flip his freakn lid. He always wanted to show military power like a dictator. This defense exercise would make great media and draw more attention to Jan 6 attack on Democracy.
