Martina Navratilova hit with 'double whammy' diagnosis of two forms of cancer

Martina Navratilova has been hit with a “double whammy” diagnosis of two forms of cancer.

The 66-year-old Wimbledon champion confirmed she discovered an enlarged lymph node in her neck in November, with tests saying she had stage one throat cancer.

Another “suspicious form” was then found in her breast unrelated to her throat cancer.

Martina said: “This double whammy is serious but still fixable. I’m hoping for a favourable outcome. It’s going to stink for a while but I’ll fight with all I have got.”

I always loved watching her play when I was a kid. I wish her a full recovery.

But dual diagnosis isn't.

Both my mother and I have dual diagnoses: breast cancer x 2 for her (a district second breast cancer - not recurrence or metastasis); breast cancer and sarcoma for me. My BIL does, as well (prostate cancer and a rare melanoma - diagnosed within a year of each other). My mother may have a third (a relatively benign skin cancer).

Multiple myeloma, lung cancer, and melanoma. (He had bladder and prostate cancer before that.) Unfortunately, we have the lucky cancer genes.

Are because they do a thorough evaluation once you get one, and discover others which might not have shown themselves for a bit longer.

I didn't have a PET scan with my sarcoma diagnosis- but it is fairly common, and might detect other cancers incidental to the first diagnosis.

He managed to survive until age 86. My mother had colon cancer and ovarian cancer, which were in remission after surgery and chemo. But years later, the cancer returned, unnoticed and spread to her liver and kidneys. It was discovered when her kidneys failed at age 90.

I’d say she ushered in the world of athletes understanding how their body works.
Fred Lynne was the first baseball player who talked about lifting weights. That wa a no go due to baseball traditions.

Chrissy was a great player but she was a country club player. Martina physicality wore her out.
Other players came in and out but Martina was just simply better and had a physical plan.

in the 70s, pros like Rosie Casals used to smoke during change overs! Martina battled weight issues after her defection (she liked American fast food), but she eventually turned her body into an absolute machine through training and nutritionists. She was even one of the first people to have a sports psychologist. All of that's become perfectly normal for world class athletes, but she (and to some extent Lendl) revolutionized it in the sport. Evert realized her raw talent wasn't enough after Martina got herself going and she also started using trainers, etc.

IMO, in a world where we call far too many people the GOAT, Navratilova is the actual article for all those reasons and more.

As you say, before 1980 professional tennis was pretty much a country club affair. Martina got herself into shape, fought off her mental demons, and became SO dominant in 1983 and 1984 that she rarely lost a match.

She also forced other players like Evert and Shriver to alter their games in order to keep up with her (or to attempt to, that is). Her efforts spilled over into the men's game, and also paved the way for Graf and the Williams sisters later.

Women's tennis was pretty much a snoozefest until Martina came along.

Was the best female athlete I ever saw before Serena came along.
OK, maybe Jackie Joyner-Kersee belongs in the photo. And, if Wilma Rudolph had modern training, she might be.
