Tesla drives off cliff at Devil's Slide, crews rescue 2 adults, 2 kids in critical condition
PACIFICA (CBS SF) A Tesla drove off a cliff near Devil's Slide Monday morning, leaving two adults and two children in critical condition, according to Cal Fire.
Cal Fire's San Mateo-Santa Cruz unit first tweeted about the accident around noon Monday. Officials noted that the Tesla fell about 250 feet down.
While rescuers were on the ground assessing damage, multiple air ambulances were en route.
Cal Fire officials warned commuters needing to take Highway 1 to expect delays.

(1,138 posts)Even a decade ago if a vehicle was said to have done something it could pretty much be taken for granted that a human was in control behind the wheel. Now, with self-driving vehicles, we will need to be a bit more careful in our description of events.

(5,942 posts)I read that one of the rescuers who filmed part of the rescue said it was a miracle and he was getting a Tesla.

(12,660 posts)Road was probably slick to begin with, and Highway 1 can be treacherous if they were going too fast for the road conditions to begin with.
That being said, unless they were in some sort of driver assist mode that could not take a sudden change of road condition or made some weird avoidance move that caused the car to spin out, the make of the car is probably not important at all to the story.

Devil's Slide is one of my main hiking areas. I hope the people can be rescued and recover.

EDIT: By 3:20 p.m. all four victims had been rescued and taken to nearby hospitals. There were no updates on any of their conditions, other than the two adults were still critical.

(11,564 posts)what is the point of naming the brand of car? Not that i'm at all concerned about Tesla, and indeed, anything that EM touches, getting negative publicity.

One would to have to be a complete fool to trust a self-driving car in these early stages.

(10,202 posts)Yeesh, thats awful. The Lantos Tunnel has cut down on a lot of Slide mishaps, but Hwy 1 is still risky when you first come out of the tunnel going south.
