(18,656 posts)Shannon Watts, the founder of the gun violence prevention group Moms Demand Action, said the shooting underscores the need for stronger gun safety laws.
This is a horrific tragedy, she said. But its also completely preventable and senseless. Watts said the facts of the case are startling. The idea that a 6-year-old can have intent and the ability to shoot and kill their teacher on purpose is bizarre, she said.

(41,991 posts)There are rare cases where a child of six might show psychopathic tendencies but in almost every caseeven thosetheyre still in the age of magical thinking. Dead isnt dead, things and people arent fixed and permanent the way we think of them. She might have intended to kill her teacher but youd be shocked how many little kids would like to see someone dead in a moment of pain or fear or rage. But they dont know what it means, only what theyve seen. In a week that same person could be their hero, their savior, or nobody in particular.
There is a wide variety of manifestations of development according to how kids are raised, what they see as a norm, what traumas they may have suffered and where they are on the sensory input spectrum among a host of others. The problem here is, and I say this as a professional, THE GODDAMNED GUN!!

(32,086 posts)The article says the shooter was a boy. The girl mentioned in the article is the granddaughter of one of the people they interviewed, not the shooter.
