U.S. State Dept says an individual on official visa and no longer on official business should leave or apply for new status

Mon, January 9, 2023 at 2:41 PM EST·1 min read

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. State Department said on Monday that it was incumbent on an individual who entered the United States on a so-called "A" visa reserved for diplomats and heads of state to depart the country within 30 days or apply for a change of immigration status if they are no longer engaged in official business.

Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro flew to Florida two days before his term ended on Jan. 1, before his supporters stormed the country's capital on Sunday, and is believed to have entered on such a visa.

State Department spokesperson Ned Price said at a press briefing that he could not comment on an individual's visa status, but spoke in general about visa rules.

"If an individual has no basis on which to be in the United States, an individual is subject to removal by the Department of Homeland Security," Price said.

"Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro has been admitted with abdominal pain to a hospital in Florida, his wife said.

It comes a day after thousands of his supporters stormed government offices in the Brazilian capital.

Mr Bolsonaro was taken to a hospital near Orlando on Monday, according to reports.

The former president was stabbed in 2018 and has since struggled with abdominal pain on occasion."

to Moscow perhaps, maybe he should be held on a "trumped up charge", forgive the pun, awaiting potential extradition.

I know, I know. But in a perfect and just world.

About charging who created the mess in the first place. Bolsonaro knows he may well be dragged off of the plane by government troops the second he lands.

First, Brazil is going to want him back if they decide to charge him. The US has an extradition treaty with them. The only question is whether we keep him from leaving the US while Brazil decides what to do.

Second, most of the countries in S. America that would not extradite to the US, will extradite to Brazil. He will be stuck with some far less desirable locations if he decides to, and is able to, run for it.
