I understand why she did it now. To start raising money, and get out in front of the pack that might develop if Feinstein does say she's not going to run again.
But she could have waited for Feinstein to do that. And also the timing looks bad with all the flooding and storms passing through lately and in the coming days.
Like I said, she probably wanted to get a jump on the other candidates who will enter the playing field if/when Feinstein makes a statement. This was likely planned long ago, irrespective of weather complications.

(11,361 posts)and that is the problem. Porter (and the party) would have loved to have just such an opportunity. Unfortunately - wasn't coming. (and probably needed to)

And maybe Padilla has been encouraging Porter to affirmatively step forward.

(1,859 posts)Can she raise funds for a House run and then roll it over to a Senate campaign? As she stated, the weather is going to be an issue from here on out. Also she will actually get out and meet her voters unlike so many others who do not. It takes time. She is successful because she cares. I would love to have a politician who cared half as much as she does. I hope you keep her! 😁

(3,064 posts)I wish I could vote for her but I can and will contribute to her. I've contributed to her campaigns several times am looking forward to doing to again.
And apparently Senator Feinstein has signaled her intent not to run again. That's wise.
And I guess that asshole Grassley wants to be in the Senate when he celebrates his 100th birthday.

(89,264 posts)money for advertising because the state is too big to reach out with just rallies and meet and greet type events.
So i'm guessing her choice was to announce early and start raising funds and have a chance at winning the Primary or not have a realistic chance at winning by waiting and not having funding .

"During wildfire season, Katie?!"
Just, whatever. It's empty posturing.
Feinstein should have announced after midterms. I think people were waiting for that. Well, she's taking all the time for whatever reason while people are trying to get their ducks in a row. Open seats in California have not been common things, and the primary should be epic.
Feinstein has been given a lot of space and a lot of respect given what are, let's say, delicate circumstances regarding the end of her service.
But eventually, someone was going to have to say or do something. Porter did. That's fine by me.

(5,501 posts)It could be a political tightrope for Katie if Feinstein doesn't announce but I think she can manage that. It's time for a change. Porter is the perfect person to replace Feinstein.

(1,327 posts)and probably should not have run for her last term if reports of her mental condition are accurate. It takes years to get a senate campaign underway and the amount of fundraising needed is intense. It's not something that can happen overnight and with all respect to Feinstein, who has been a wonderful public servant... some of her decision making in recent years has been more about what is best for her than what is best for her constituency. Why would anyone have confidence that she would announce in the near future, announce at all (!) or even do so in a way that is supportive to the others who will run to replace her seat?
There is never going to be a perfect time to announce. If there hadn't been flooding and storms, it would have been a polar vortex. Or a mass shooting. Or a covid surge. Or the airline snafu. An international incident. Or some other mess. There is a timing problem every single day.
She's a great candidate and there will be other great candidates vying for the seat. I can't blame her for throwing her name in the ring.
