I was told even if he is arrested, even if he is convicted. Well, since no House member can vote remotely, he cannot vote from jail.
Also, since he cannot vote remotely that means he cannot vote from Brazil. If Brazil wants to bring charges against him then he needs to be extradited. Let him remain a Magat congressman from Brazil.
Also, this guy is not a joke, this is not a laughing matter. There is a name of a Republican woman being floated about who funnels money to Republicans. Someone funneled 750 thousand dollars to Santos from which he loaned himself 700 thousand dollars.
It would be foolish of me to believe that this Republican woman only funneled money to George Santos. Merrick Garland is Johnny on the spot to sic a US Marshall unto President Biden, he needs to get his ass in gear and sic a federal Marshall onto this Republican woman.
This smells a lot like massive campaign violations.

(24,763 posts)he can and will be forced to resign.
This is more stink on the shit of McCarthy and the Rs.

(21,402 posts)McCarthy needs that 1 vote. I guarantee that if Santos resigns that a Democrat will win the special election, that will take away 2 votes from McCarthy.

(24,763 posts)wouldn't it be amazing if a D won!
But the way this is going, as I say - I'm confident hell be gone. Too much legal exposure, too many charges.
But I've been wrong before!

(112,405 posts)He will maintain enough GOP support while investigations and trials occur. The only way that he loses enough GOP support is if he is convicted. Realistically, the most Democrats can hope for is that he becomes a non-voting representative this term because he is in prison or extradited. Unfortunately, it means that his district won't have any representation, but if the voters in the district did not do any research before they voted, then they got what they deserved.

McCarthy says embattled Rep. Santos should not get seated on top committees
WASHINGTON - House Speaker Kevin McCarthy said Wednesday that embattled freshman GOP Rep. George Santos, who is facing growing calls to resign after admitting to fabricating much of his personal biography, should not be seated on any top House committees.

(42,758 posts)That could happen if he's convicted of a criminal offense, but won't happen otherwise. The votes won't be there.
Assuming he is indicted as some point, he won't be inaceraqted while awaiting and standing trial, so until that process is completed and he's convicted, he will be able to vote.
Obviously, he wouldn't be able to vote if he was extradited to Brazil, but its far from certain that such extradition would occur in this instance.

(13,582 posts)So I dont expect the weakest speaker in one hundred years to do much. But I believe that just a little digging will uncover a series of crimes spanning his adult life. Reporters need to start digging. If everything he said publicly during his campaign was a lie - what is he covering up?
Follow the money.

(42,758 posts)He was charged in 2011 and the case was "archived" in 2013. Santos ran for Congress in 2020, so his whereabouts were known at least at that point and it wouldn't have been impossible to find him before that if the Brazilian authorities really cared about his case.

(11,358 posts)where we are not stuck with the guy for 2 years. Which sucks. But the Republicans very narrow majority means that they almost cannot afford to lose the vote he represents. (even if they were so inclined) And extradition, of an elected U.S. official (for years old check kiting charge?) - seems, almost fanciful. I think it extremely unlikely we would see such a request made on the part of Brazil.
That does not preclude all sorts of legal trouble for the baby faced con here on native soil. But I just don't think any of it will serve to un-seat him.

(11,643 posts)... Is preferable to Kevin McCarthy over Democrat in the chamber who can. Santos isn't going anywhere.

(15,265 posts)McCarthy would rather have a missing Republican vote than a Republican vote being replaced by a Democratic vote.
If McCarthy has demonstrated anything clearly, it is that he has no shame. Santos being in jail would be horribly embarrassing for Republicans, but they can shrug off embarrassment easily enough.

You bet we wanted him to stay with his fiery oratory and attacks on the mark on Republicans.
But once the issues of his laptop and minor females became known, even he knew he couldn't stay. We needed his vote, but he couldn't stay.
George Santos has no shame.

We must repeat this all the time, every day.
It needs to be stated every time there is a vote, or
another sordid/ mucky event- and there will be more.
