It's a symbolic gesture aimed at states like California. While jurisdictions like California and New York move toward banning the sale of new gasoline-powered cars, one US state wants to go in the opposite direction. Wyomings legislature is considering a resolution that calls for a phaseout of new electric vehicle sales by 2035. Introduced on Friday, Senate Joint Resolution 4 has support from members of the states House of Representatives and Senate.
In the proposed resolution, a group of lawmakers led by Senator Jim Anderson says Wyomings proud and valued oil and gas industry has created countless jobs and contributed revenue to the states coffers. They add that a lack of charging infrastructure within Wyoming would make the widespread use of EVs impracticable and that the state would need to build massive amounts of new power generation to sustain the misadventure of electric vehicles.
SJ4 calls for residents and businesses to limit the sale and purchase of EVs voluntarily, with the goal of phasing them out entirely by 2035. If passed, the resolution would be entirely symbolic. In fact, its more about sending a message to EV advocates than banning the vehicles altogether. To that point, the final section of SJ4 calls for Wyomings Secretary of State to send President Biden and California Governor Gavin Newsom copies of the resolution.
One might even say tongue-in-cheek, but obviously its a very serious issue that deserves some public discussion, Senator Boner, one of the bills co-sponsors, told the Cowboy State Daily. Im interested in making sure that the solutions that some folks want to the so-called climate crisis are actually practical in real life. I just dont appreciate when other states try to force technology that isnt ready,

(19,177 posts)They'll basically be chasing the auto industry out of their state.
By 2035, there won't be any automakers left making ICE vehicles, so Wyoming residents would be forced to leave the state for any new automobile purchase.

(9,132 posts)Theres like to be darn few Wyoming auto dealers if this idiocy becomes law. Former Wyoming car dealerships will become the new wide open spaces.
And Repuds accuse us Democrats of being anti-business?
So where would Wyoming car-buyers go shopping for new wheels?
Out of state!

(19,177 posts)What some people can't seem to get through their thick skulls (even some here on DU), is that the automakers are all in on EVs. GM, Ford, VW Toyota etc etc want to sell all EVs, it's what they've committed to because it's good for their businesses. They're easier (cheaper) to build. Potentially more profitable. Easier to maintain and safer. Their engineers are more excited to design and build them. And yes, even giant corporations want to fight global warming.
It always cracks me up in debates about EVs that one side seems totally oblivious to the fact that the automakers are all planning to stop making ICE vehicles on their own already. The phase out has already started, and pick a large maker and they plan to cease production of all ICE vehicles in some year between 2028 and 2035. So all this talk that consumers will still want new EVs in 15 years is moot, they won't be able to buy them because no one will be making them, period.
Now there is still a lot of work to be done on our infrastructure between now and then, thankfully because of Biden, a ton of it is underway. Good conversations to be having in 2023 though, rather than in 2028 or 2030.

(24,380 posts)In a state of less than 600,000 people, I would say its hardly countless. I would say easily countable.
