Roughly 25% of our total national debt occurred during the 4 years of the Trump administration.

This is correct, and should be part of all "runaway debt" stories.

For context, roughly 25% of our total national debt incurred over the last 230 years actually occurred during the 4 years of the Trump administration. That's right. 25% of our entire national debt, all during the Trump years.

David Jolly: Why I support Dan Webster for speaker
By Amy Hollyfield | Former Times staffer
Published Oct. 9, 2015

U.S. Rep. David Jolly, R-Indian Shores, has an op-ed column in today's Tampa Bay Times explaining why he supports Dan Webster for House speaker. An excerpt:

Dan Webster served honorably as speaker of the Florida House in Tallahassee at a time when Republicans controlled the Legislature and ...

Jolly omits in his follow-up "analysis" the fact that President Obama had to deal with Bush's virtual destruction of the economy and the costs of Bush's unnecessary (to say the very least) invasion of Iraq. Neither could be solved immediately as history shows, and the efforts to deal with Bush's disastrous policies were hindered by the GOP, Speaker Boehner and the Tea Party.

His follow-up "analysis"...

Very true - but very back of the napkin math:

210 years, 5 trillion.
8 years under Bush, now 10t.
8 years under Obama, now 20t.
4 years under Trump, now 28t.

COVID was an amplifier of 3t, but the pattern continued regardless.

No party when in power has taken responsibility.

Anyway, what Jolly says is partially true at best and massively decontextualized. It seems that allies like Jolly do more to paper over what actually happened than to fight the current state of the GOP. Specifically, they are minimally trustworthy at best.

In case it needs to be mentioned, Daniel Webster (Rep, R-FL) is still in Congress and was one of the GOP who voted not to certify President Biden's election.

The Republicans who voted to overturn the election
Reuters asked the 147 lawmakers who voted to overturn the U.S. election if they believed Donald Trump lost the presidency because of election fraud. Most dodged the question.

Rep. Daniel Webster
Fla. 11

Members of Congress “have no express authority or ability to independently prove the many allegations of fraud”, but many are “convinced the election laws in certain states were changed in an unconstitutional manner,” Webster said in a statement outlining his objection.
