North Dakota Could Jail Librarians Who Don't Comply with Anti-LGBTQ+ Book Bans

North Dakota lawmakers have introduced legislation to ban books that contain “sexually explicit” content from public libraries, including a provision that could jail librarians if they don’t comply.

While Republican legislators around the country have introduced similar bills over the past year, most apply only to school libraries. House Bill 1205, however, would ban all public libraries from stocking “sexually explicit” materials in the name of protecting children, meaning that readers of all ages would be banned from accessing LGBTQ+-inclusive texts, which are largely what these bans restrict.

Introduced Tuesday by North Dakota House Representatives Mike Lefor and Vicky Steiner, the bill would redefine “explicit sexual material” to include “deviant sexual intercourse,” “sadomasochistic abuse,” “sexual perversion,” “sexual identity,” and/or “gender identity.” Neither “deviant” nor “perversion” are defined in the bill, a likely intentionally vague wording that could apply to just about anything. The public will be allowed to submit removal requests to libraries regarding books that violate the bill. Libraries must individually develop review processes for these requests, and if found guilty, they would be forced to remove the book within 30 days of receiving the request. Those who are found guilty of stocking such books would be guilty of a Class B misdemeanor, which carries a penalty of up to 30 days in jail, a fine of $1,500, or both.

Lefor cited the graphic novel Let's Talk About It: The Teen's Guide to Sex, Relationships, and Being a Human as one reason why he put the bill forth, according to the Bismarck Tribune. Referencing illustrations of nudity, Lefor stated that he thought the content was “disgusting,” and that public libraries “should put it in a restricted area where (children) need to get permission from their parents to take a book out like this, but they're offering it to junior high school kids ... and when we grew up, we didn't need things like this.”

Instead of trying to legislate morality and banning books, maybe encourage critical reasoning skills to be able to navigate personal choices in a world where all these things always existed.

Nope. The FreeDums people are going to tell you how you can live your life.

I have no doubt in my mind that if these fucking assholes got back in the White House that they'd attempt genocide. This is where it is leading. God I hate the GOP, Fox, and the conspiracy theory wing. They can all go rot in the fieriest pit of hell.

I agree that it keeps getting worse, and it will get a lot worse...for a while.

And then it will stop and get better, because the majority of the electorate won't put up with this crap for too much longer. The absence of a "red wave" in November is evidence of that, in my opinion.

Liberals and progressives just need to take back and dominate the argument for the betterment of a just society. Conservatives sure as hell won't.

The conservative wing of American politics knows (and has known for decades) that they are on the losing end of the argument, both practically and demographically. It might take another 20 or 30 years, but those old, white assholes who are doing this shit will die soon enough, OR if they are younger and don't die, will get voted out because they will be outnumbered.

They can't do this kind of shit unless they are in positions of power, and the only reason they can get into positions of power for the most part, is because they cheat.

It won't last forever. If it does, this country is doomed.

7. We have to start fighting back against the propaganda machine.

I mean Fox, AM radio, Infowars, TPUSA, and all of that shit. The propaganda has too much of a hold on half of the country and it's how we get these lousy politicians like Boebert, Greene, Gaetz, McCarthy, Gosar, McConnell, and so on that we can't get rid of. If we are to fight back against these evil forces, we have to start holding them accountable. Especially Fox. They've been getting away with some shockingly hateful rhetoric for far too long and they have gone unpunished. It's time to start punishing them or it will get worse.

Things like what? Libraries? Books?

Oh, he must mean pictures of nude people. Yeah, right. Anyone who has ever worked in a public library (I have) will tell you that kids are going to find a way to look at whatever they want. Heck, by the time they're preteen, you're lucky if you can even get them to go to a library any more.

This guy is so out of touch with today's world. Maybe he should check out those books and learn some lessons on Being a Human.

Under the guise of "protecting children" when we all know damn well these laws they're proposing will have the exact opposite effect. This is some scary cult shit.
