Interesting read from CNN
Romney officials had modeled an electorate that looked something like a mix of 2004 and 2008, only this time, Democratic turnout would be depressed, and the most motivated voters would be whites, seniors, Republicans and independents.
Heading into Election Day, the Romney campaign's final set of internal poll numbers showed their candidate with a 6-point lead in New Hampshire, a 3-point lead in Colorado, a 2-point lead in Iowa, a 3-point lead in Florida and near ties in Virginia and Pennsylvania.
Ohio was their biggest problem. According to the campaign's internal polls obtained by CNN, Romney was trailing in the must-win state by a full 5 points on the Sunday before the election, the last day of tracking.

(51,076 posts)I don't remember it but that is what happened to the rMoney crew. They thought they could lie their way through this election and that wasn't to be. Our President doesn't lie to us so why would we chose someone who does over the man who doesn't.

(20,851 posts)no one gets promoted telling the boss bad news so the camp closest to the boss becomes a self-licking ice cream cone.
It's the kind of mentality that gave you the Iraq war, Katrina recovery, pre-9/11 intelligence, the torture memo... etc.
It is the clearest sign Romney and the business CEO mentality is the wrong model for the US government.

(81,298 posts)The only women a CEO has ever bothered with, professionally, are secretaries and executive assistants. The "ladies" are supposed to be home, going shopping and to luncheons at the country club, having their mani-pedis and full body massages and waxings, and watching the nannies watch the children. And occasionally they'll have some token woman who has to be home by 6pm to cook dinner - because heaven forbid that she'd have married a man who knew his own way around a kitchen! I forget who said it but this IS the "Mad Men" meets "Ozzie and Harriet" approach - that's being forcibly applied to a "Modern Family" world. And there's no fit. At ALL. This is a different world. Their ideas are outdated. Their attitudes are outdated. Their priorities are outdated. Their agenda is outdated. And increasingly IRRELEVANT.
The CEO mentality has NO BUSINESS WHATSOEVER trying to "run" a government that's supposed to be of the people, by the people, and for the people. The CEO does not just hand down an edict or have a memo sent around and everybody bows and scrapes and complies because they need their jobs, or else they can find their way to the door. Government DOESN'T WORK THAT WAY! I noticed this, manifested in ayn wrongney's indignant statement that we should feel "blessed that a man like mitt has the chance to run the country." Whereas, Barack Obama seeks the presidency to be of help and service to America, to reach out, and to help move our country forward. The United States government is NOT a for-profit entity answerable to stockholders and investors who are expecting dividends for their money. That's a corporation. A private company. NOT a public entity like a government. It is ridiculously simplistic to assert that government should be run like a business. The two aren't even on the same planet. It just doesn't work that way. And it wasn't set up to work that way, either. That's not what you establish a more perfect union for - just cravenly to make a profit!
And until the modern republi-CON party starts to understand this, it will continue to shrivel into regional party status only. Which certainly wouldn't make me unhappy!

(3,666 posts)At least according to the article. But they could be talking only about the Ohio internal.
But it's consistent with their behavior. They actually seemed to believe that they were winning. Romney, after all, didn't even prepare a concession speech and they refused to believe the every network's call of Ohio when it first came in. Plus if these were the numbers they were getting and they leaked them to the press, that would explain all the crap that was being spewed about how the race was tied, etc. It would explain Rove and Barone's outlandishly wrong predictions too. I mean the public polls weren't showing anything like what the media was saying for the most part -- except gallup and Rassmussen.

(20,851 posts)The friend I know that runs GOP campaigns was talking for the last 2 weeks about how good the internal polling was. They made a lot of $$ bets that Romney was going to win. They were deeply shocked that the election tracked Nate Silver's model exactly. The problem with bullshitters is eventually they believe their own bullshit. A person like Ann Coulter starts out as an act to make $ but eventually you become your character. In a world of bullshit, no one knows what is real, but they all think they know. Eventually they don't know.

(50,942 posts)Next time they need to concentrate more in the boondocks to find the voters that fit their model. Get far away from the high density areas that are polluted with more liberal minded voters that are likely to influence their regular voters to pull the wrong lever. The best place to get enough voters into Romney's bucket are Utah and Wyoming. They should send all of their staff there and make sure they have all of their voters tagged and put in the bucket and on a regular basis make sure the voters in their bucket is counted regularly. If they need help in counting the voters Paul Ryan should be able to help with his wizard math.
