Those cops got mad and decided to murder Tyre Nichols. That's what I saw. At the initial stop, when they went hands-on with him, some dumbshit deployed pepper spray and it got all over everyone. Instead of being pissed off at the dumbshit, they got mad at Tyre Nichols. Then, after he got away from them, they were mad because they had to chase him down.
Then, after they caught up to him again, they decided to really take their mad out on him. Running kick to the face, check. Baton strikes while other officers held him down, check. Two officers holding him up while another punched him in the face, check. Two officers holding him down while two more kicked him in the ribs, check.
Their defense attorneys have their work cut out for them. Defending the indefensible is a big lift.

(543 posts)I thought that was a thing to keep us citizens safe from tyranny?

(31,019 posts)Support from the other police. They are so used to making up lies about these things, they forget, everybody is watching now. We are seeing what happens when people who are put in authority who are not screened and trained, oh yeah and then hand them a gun and other weapons. The scorpion unit. Too macho. Quit glorifying the shit

(3,188 posts)As an old fellow I knew in Mississippi would've said, they had their dander up. Intellectually, they knew full well that they themselves were toting cameras recording everything. They knew their squadcars had dashcams. They knew there were almost certainly other cameras nearby, such as the pole camera that clearly showed the beating they delivered.
They didn't care. They knew all of these things, but they were so angry they didn't care. They just wanted to make Tyre Nichols suffer, so they did. And now here they are, staring down a long prison sentence. I hope that's what they get, too. Life behind bars for each of them seems fair to me.

(31,019 posts)Dont understand that civilians also react with anger when pain is infected on them, such as a pepper spray for no reason

(3,188 posts)If you're hands-on with someone and you have multiple officers there, you just wear them out. One officer holds down their legs while two more officers force their wrists together and get them cuffed up. At most, use a Taser to drive-stun.
There was also the fact that, at the initial stop, one of the officers was holding Mr. Nichols' left wrist, so he couldn't put his arms behind his back when told to do so. None of the officers there took charge and directed things, what cops refer to as "one voice."
It was a big, stupid, rage-filled mess, and Tyre Nichols is dead as a result.

(31,019 posts)What I have noticed from a lot of these videos is cops are all shouting different commands, which one are you supposed to do, put your hands up,get on the ground put your hands behind your back you hear it all at once. And the use of his pepper spray reminds me of that cop in Virginia who sprayed the young lieutenant coming from his army duty. Its just used as punishment. Sadistic cops is the problem. We need to overhaul the training and pick out these people. Thats just how I see it

(3,188 posts)Fight the charge in court, not in the streets. That's my advice, anyway.
This incident is pretty much a great example of how not to do things. One of the officers on the bodycam video said that Mr. Nichols had stopped at a red light and put on his turn signal after they saw him driving into oncoming traffic. So at that point, pull up behind the car with lights and sirens and get him to pull over. If he takes off, either pursue or don't based on department policy.
If he doesn't take off, approach the vehicle and just do a basic traffic stop since reckless driving isn't a felony stop situation. Instead, they swarmed the car, all screaming different commands, yanked him out, and it just kept escalating from there. Even if it had been a felony stop, that was still the stupidest possible way to go about it.
I've worked for a police department, and they do psychological screening during the hiring process. Even for dispatchers, it was a long and drawn-out process. What should change is regular temperature checks after someone is hired. I think every officer should have a touch base meeting with a psychologist every six months, minimum, just to see how they're doing and where their head is at. If the psychologist thinks there are concerns, then take a closer look and get the officer in question the help they need before something like this happens.
And that isn't even touching the ways in which their training needs to change.

(4,237 posts)and make them ground fucking zero for suing pigs into the Stone Age. I'd prefer the example that will stop future victims. Jailing these pigs will not accomplish the same thing. After we throw QUALIFIED IMMUNITY on the trash heap of history, feel free to jail the fuck out of future pigs who don't deserve the badge. ACAB.

(22,722 posts)wasn't he arrested too?

(3,188 posts)The only ones charged and arrested thus far, to the best of my knowledge, are the ones who actually beat the shit out of Mr. Nichols. The bodycam footage from the white officer was at the initial contact, from what I saw. After Mr. Nichols ran, the white officer ran like half a block and then stopped. If he was present at the second scene, it wasn't until after the beating had ended.

(31,019 posts)I thought maybe he was gonna go over there and take charge and get control of it. That thought didnt last long because then the next second he gave him a full force kick right to the head. Cops are not taught basic humanity.
