Oh Deer!

The white tailed deer was introduced to Jamaica in 1980's.
A known introduction of the white tailed deer to Jamaica was when deer escaped from local tourist attraction Somerset Falls during Hurricane Gilbert in 1988. During the hurricane, 6 deer escaped from Somerset Falls in Portland and went into the wild.

--------------
Now their offspring are terrorizing farmers in Portland.

Now they’re producing up to three fawn - the absence of seasons doesn’t help.

4. Without predators, the population will increase wildly

Their natural predators would be wolves, cougars, and coyotes. Their natural defense against predators is to reproduce, if there are none, they will severely damage the ecosystem by overgrazing. There is a well documented case of this in an area of northern Arizona.

Without natural predators or hunters, things get very bad. Massive starvation and disease are common. I’ve seen what happens when a herd of deer are trapped in a stand of trees by a blizzard, they eat all the grass, then the tree branches, then the bark, then they starve to death, after having killed the trees. It is a terrible thing to come across.

Invasive species cause problems.

pests around here. They try to keep a balance between the insurance industry and hunters.
