More than 40 million people are under winter weather alerts from Texas to West Virginia

More than 40 million people from Texas to West Virginia are under winter weather alerts Monday as a system threatens heavy precipitation, significant icing and bitter cold, with roads due to be treacherous and quick frostbite possible in places.

Ice accumulation is expected across at least 15 states, the National Weather Service’s Weather Prediction Center said.

“Total freezing rain amounts could become significant across parts of central Texas, southwest Oklahoma, central Arkansas, and western Tennessee, where over a quarter inch of ice accrual is forecast. Additionally, low to moderate chances for three-day ice accretion over a half inch exists over parts of central Texas and Arkansas,” the center said.

Wintry precipitation will come in several waves across the region through Wednesday, and while there may be breaks in the active weather, roads will remain slick throughout the event as temperatures stay cold.

Just a heads up to please be careful out there or to get ahead of the storm so you will not need to go out.

For Wisconsin, that is.

We had about 10 inches of new snow, and it's 3 degrees as I write this.

But warming up, should stay above 0 for a while (?) after today. We got about a foot of snow over the weekend, then this cold, the usual routine.

Staying inside in this cold and bad weather is my usual plan but that is only so good until the power goes out and you live in a place that is completely run by electric. I had that happen on Saturday, I had to bail after a short time which involved braving a -20F wind chill to help my stuck in the snow neighbor, then clear my vehicle and then dive to a friend's place, less then a mile thankfully, over unplowed streets. I don't know why they don;t plow here, it's not like 90% of local vehicles have a foot of clearance (WTF?).

So having an escape plan is a good idea too, one that involves getting to alternative shelter. Here, in the Montana Rockies, it is common local knowledge that you should always have in your vehicle: Shovel, Bucket, emergency gear for cold weather, a blanket and water + nuts or some protein and those hand warmer packets along with a 1st aid kit. It's remote and inhospitable in bad weather and survival depends on preparedness. If you live here for any length of time, you know this.
