(3,581 posts)It probably gets more eyeballs there than it will on CNN.

(3,581 posts)My latter speculation about viewership?
Overtime on Youtube gets an average of 1 million+ views.
Do you think 1 million people are watching CNN in any given primetime hour? They aren't. More like 750k.
More people will see the live airing, sure. But it's not unreasonable to think that more eyes will see it over time on Youtube.

(19,066 posts)Bill Maher is quickly morphing into Bill O'Reilly. It really is stunning and sad to see. 2 weeks ago, he spent half his show agreeing with his 2 guests that trans people are grooming school children. He said that every school in America is forcing kindergartners to learn about gender identity everyday instead of math and science. He is sick.
I said I was done with him, but I tuned in for a few minutes this Friday to see what they'd say about Memphis, he and his 2 white guests spent a few minutes talking about how Dems are to blame for losing the House because they're obsessed with race. About how this was black cops, so it's not a race issue.
Bill Maher is gone. His brain is fried and he's descending down the Right Wing rabbit hole so quickly he's going to be on FOX news within a year.

(19,066 posts)That's the perfect word for him right now, Bill Maher is a bigot.
The episode on trans was so terrible and dangerous. Basically repeating what you might expect to hear at a neo Nazi rally. "They're coming after your kids." "Trans people are rare, but want people to think they aren't." "Children are being tricked into sex changes."
If a transcript of that show was read by every DUer, Bill Maher would be boycotted here. He's an out of touch disgusting bigot spreading Right Wing lies that are basically dog whistles for violence.
Given the heat Dave Chappelle takes here, Bill Maher has said way more anti trans things and he's said way more dangerous anti trans things than Chappelle has and by an order of 20 times. It's truly disgusting, hateful, and dangerous.

(667 posts)He isn't happy unless he's bitching.
Years ago, there was a Family Guy episode, shortly after Obama won, and Brian becomes a conservative who befriends Rush Limbaugh. At the end of the episode, Limbaugh tells him he's not a conservative, he's just someone who has to be opposed to the establishment no matter what. I think that fits Maher. He just loves to complain.

(58,785 posts)Liberals "get" bigotry far more than others. The biggest single difference between liberals and others is in our belief, gut level and principle, in equality.
No to calling people liberal who may imagine they support the democracy that is humanity's biggest tool for equality but would overthrow it tomorrow and call it serving "the people" if it'd put their leader and faction on top. I'm guessing this show draws an outsize proportion of the latter. As for commitment to equality, they tend to claim that too ( ), but it's telling that in 2016 their biggest chance at gaining power couldn't give America's black monolith the basic agreements required for support. (But the liberal Democratic Party most black voters align with for equality of course could.)
Liberal principles aren't discardable. Like equality of ALL, liberty of all, pursuit of happiness, government OF, BY and FOR the people just some. No to government of, by and for a leader or ideology; no to authoritarianism -- liberals are the anti-authoritarians.
Many, many studies have been done and books written about il-liberal left types. (And their cousins the il-liberal right.)
But to me they're adequately characterized by behavior and history -- by their lack of commitment to the principles of representative democracy and the deceits that leads to, by their dysfunctions that've caused every effort to make progressive advances or to maintain a viable third party to fail, by their opposition and hostility to the liberal pro-democracy/anti-authoritarian Democratic Party that always blocks their path to power, and above all, to me, by the critical dependence on deceit of self and others that they share with the illiberal right.

(9,074 posts)It's like an eight minute segment you can already watch on YouTube whenever. Sounds like someone was looking for some time to fill.
But I will never not find the loinal chafing whenever the man's name is mentioned hilarious.

(58,785 posts)I suspect Maher is more of the same agenda. A way of offering LW viewers what sounds like confirmation their beliefs without promoting confidence in the Democratic Party.

(4,253 posts)I agree with the Bill O'Reilly comparison. I can not stand to watch bill Maher. I watched 10 minutes of his last Friday show and then shut him off. I still don't like what he has become.

(5,504 posts)He has been an annoying hack ever since he wrote for The Huffington Post. Now his comedy is repeating Fox News talking points while making smug, punchable faces. I dont understand how anyone finds him remotely enjoyable to watch.

(3,826 posts)"Overtime" is already produced (though it's shorter - sometimes it's only 5 minutes) and cable is dead at that time.
There is little risk to it and it promotes HBO Max and Bill's main show.
