MEMPHIS — The Memphis Police Department confirmed on Monday that a sixth officer had been placed on administrative leave in connection with the death of Tyre Nichols.

Five other officers were fired by the department earlier this month, soon after being placed on leave, and charged last week with second-degree murder in connection with Mr. Nichols’s death. It is not clear exactly what role the sixth, Preston Hemphill, played in the incident, which took place on the night of Jan. 7.

A spokesman for the department confirmed on Monday that Mr. Hemphill had been placed on leave on the same day that the other officers were suspended.

Police officers kicked Mr. Nichols in the head, pepper-sprayed him and hit him repeatedly with a baton after pulling him over, allegedly for reckless driving, on Jan. 7, even as he showed no signs of fighting back on the videos of the incident released on Friday. Mr. Nichols, a 29-year-old Black man, died in a hospital three days after the encounter.

This is Detective Preston Hemphill, he's named in the affidavit as having deployed his taser & he's also the person recorded as saying "I hope they stomp his ass."
Hemphill is one of the officers that initiated the stop of Tyre Nichols, & drew his weapon upon exiting his vehicle.

Someone help me understand why Preston Hemphill would have been promoted to detective & on a specialized task force as a 26 year old with only 4 years of experience, along with not receiving any punishment for participating in the murder of Tyre Nichols.
