When my brother lived in NY he actually met former cop Frank Serpico. Serpico got in huge trouble for exposing widespread corruption in the NYPD. He was shot in the head while supposedly making an arrest, but it was theorized that the arrest scene was actually frameup to get him killed. The guy who shot him was convicted of attempted murder. And the beat goes on . . .

In the 1980s I knew of someone in the midwest who became a policeman and that's what he always wanted to do. After one year he quit because every police officer he dealt with believed that all civilians were potential criminals and that the first job of a police officer was to protect other police officers.

It doesn't excuse anything, but it explains a lot of things.

In light of this, if cops are always taught to view all civilians as potential criminals (and potentially violent ones at that), and that their first priority to to protect themselves from u s civilians, it's not hard to see why cops do some of the things they do. It doesn't make ANY of it the least bit okay, but it's not hard to see where the kind of toxicity that leads to unarmed NONcriminals being murdered by cops comes from.

It would probably be a good idea for all of us to keep in mind that any cop we deal with is likely going to assume we are potential criminals, and in the case of black or brown people, highly dangerous potential criminals with deadly intent.

Who cares? Are you trying to become their new best friend? A cop has already decided as she approaches your car whether she is going to give a ticket or not. Nothing you say or don't say is going to change her decision.

They can't search your car unless you give permission. The exception is when they can see in plain view a weapon, drugs or evidence in a crime. A cop is not interested in going thru the trouble of searching your car just for the fun of it.

Remember the Miranda warning? If you watch any cop shows at all, you have probably heard it 1000 times:

“You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law. You have the right to an attorney. If you cannot afford an attorney, one will be provided for you. Do you understand the rights I have just read to you? With these rights in mind, do you wish to speak to me?”

Always remember that you have the right to remain silent, and they are required by law to respect that right. Be clear and unequivocal. For example:

"I am not going to answer any questions without a lawyer present." Rinse and repeat as necessary.

I've gotten into some real-life crime series lately (mainly "The First 48&quot and if a suspect mentions anything like they want to speak to an attorney, it's as if the cops were vampires and got doused with holy water. They usually stop and back off their questioning immediately.

You say NOTHING except for the following;

Am I being detained?
Am I free to go?

If they say Yes to the first, you should ask “What is your reasonable, articulable suspicion that I have committed a crime? Because they can not legally detain you without the RAS that you have, are or are about to commit a crime. And “Suspicious activity” is not a crime.

NEVER ANSWER QUESTIONS! PERIOD! The best answer TO ANY QUESTION IS SILENCE! Or simply “I don’t answer questions”

Also, if during a traffic stop the cop asks “Where are you coming from, where are you going?” Simply say “I do not wish to discuss my day with you.” Or better yet, nothing at all.

Never trust the police at all. Not for a single second. They are NOT your friends. They are legally allowed to lie to you. They willingly lie under oath in court and on reports EVERY SINGLE DAY.. If you want to make a situation worse, call the cops to that situation. The ONLY reason I would call the police to my home is if I found a body in it.

And fWIW, there are NO “good cops”. They don’t exist. The reason I say that is because every single cop that has been on the force for any length of time will have seen another cop do something illegal or violate someone’s rights and did NOTHING about it. That makes them an accomplice. They are an armed gang of thugs that occupy this society and live above the law, just as a foreign army would do.

State you will cooperate but you need an attorney.

Another question is, depending on which state you are in how long can the police hold you before you see an attorney?

Another comment I read was "what do cops do if accused of a crime?"..
They shut up and wait for the Union attorney.

That comment will allow the cop to testify in court about you being "so nervous" and I guarantee the jury will see that as consciousness of guilt.

During my campaign for the HoD I got lambasted by my Republican opponent for saying, “I know cops, I’ve worked with them, trained with them, and some of them are my friends, some are not, and some of them are murderers.” I know it’s not politically expedient, but…
