I mean, there are needs!
Desantos doesn't belong in that seat. Yet our constitutional democracy has rules to keep it from degenerating into autocracy. If we're a nation of laws and not whims, let's follow the laws.
Otherwise, any notion of democracy is whimsical.

In other words, "My candidate lost, so I'll ask the winner to step down. I'm (D), and my (D) governor's sure to appoint somebody who thinks like me."
Were I a loyal (R), I'd want Santos to continue just to avoid that. Better a nullity than an opponent.
