Ron DeSantis Is "Actively Preparing" for Presidential Run and Donald Trump Is Having a Meltdown

Ron DeSantis has not yet announced that he plans to run for president in 2024, though he might as well have. For one thing, he’s publishing a memoir, a time-honored tradition among elected officials gunning for 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. For another, he’s taken to making pronouncements contrasting Florida to the rest of the nation—and would-be voters—like: “While so many around the country have consigned the people’s rights to the graveyard, Florida has stood a freedom’s vanguard.” For yet another, his team is literally holding meetings with people they want to hire to launch his campaign.

The Washington Post reports that advisers to the Florida governor are “are actively preparing for a possible presidential run,” according to two people familiar with the matter who described “meetings and preliminary staffing moves” with the outlet. One of the sources told the Post that DeSantis’s “political team has already identified multiple potential hires in early primary states such as New Hampshire and Iowa,” adding that Phil Cox and Generra Peck, who served as “key members” of the governor’s reelection bid ”are involved in ongoing talks about 2024.” Neither Peck, who was DeSantis’s 2022 campaign manager, nor Cox, who previously served as the executive director of the Republican Governors Association, responded to the Post’s requests for comment. New Hampshire GOP delegate Bill Bowen told the paper that he’s “convinced there’s a good network of establishment party people in New Hampshire that will quickly have a very effective DeSantis campaign.”

And while this is all undoubtedly joyous news to the dozens of billionaires who would like to see the Florida governor become president, it’s clearly a less welcome development to one individual in particular, i.e. Donald Trump, who on Saturday attacked DeSantis over the possibility of throwing his name in the ring, telling the Associated Press “it would be a great act of disloyalty because, you know, I got him in [to the Florida’s governor mansion]. He had no chance. His political life was over.” He also insisted to reporters that DeSantis has misrepresented his handling of the COVID-19 crisis.

The weekend broadsides, of course, are just the latest in a now monthslong meltdown by Trump over the prospect of DeSantis running against him. Shortly before the midterms, the ex-president said, of the Florida governor: “If he did run, I will tell you things about him that won’t be very flattering. I know more about him than anybody other than perhaps his wife, who is really running his campaign.” Then, after many of his candidates of choice were embarrassed at the ballot box in the midterms, and the conservative media all but dumped him for ole Ron, Trump lost his mind in a tirade that became so unraveled he appeared to suggest he’d committed a major crime. Earlier this month, he told a conservative podcast, of his would-be competition: “So, you know, now I hear he might want to run against me. So we’ll handle that the way I handle things.” Trump did not elaborate further on that threat, but if past is prologue, the handling will involve implying Ron’s great-great-great-grandfather was involved in the assassination of Abraham Lincoln and claiming Casey DeSantis isn’t as hot as Melania.

That's a funny definition for the GOP Nanny State interfering in private business and pushing its propaganda.
