We got to see our first grandson today

and of course he's the best baby ever born.

His father, our son, is tall, blond, blue-eyed. His mother, who was born in Zimbabwe, is very dark-skinned with black hair, and short.

Our baby is going to grow up in a racist society, and already the entire family is worried that he is going to be mistreated by police. He is very long (90% percentile), so he may be tall and threatening. I don't know what color his skin will be--it darkens as he gets a little older; right now he is a lovely cafe au lait, and I find myself hoping that he won't be very, very dark--for his safety, not because anybody in either family cares what color this gorgeous little man is.

His mother has dual citizenship, US and British, and at the first hint of mistreatment she will insist that they move out of this country--which is exactly what I would do if I were she.

How sickening it is that this time of utter joy should be clouded by worries about the possible behavior of ignorant, violent, hateful people. What a dreadful thing to be worried about when a child is less than a month old.

Right, all of us with family members who are different race, religion, LGBT, we are scared.

All we want to do is love our kids and grandchildren and feel the joy of it all.

My daughter and her girlfriend are getting married this year and planning a family.
They have already said if they have any pushback endangering the children they will leave the US.

So I am worried about the kids before they are even born.

There are other children in the family of a different race and different religion.
Groups that currently are being targeted.
I worry about them.

Enjoy the baby as much as you can.
We can try our best to keep them safe.

Enjoy these moments. While they are little we can keep them safe. Hopefully the world can be a better place before he has to navigate alone. Love that little one up!😊💗💗💗

It makes me angry that you have to worry about that at such a time of joy and happiness. Spend all of the time you can with them.

On their mother’s side 100% and my son is half Cuban. They are beautiful n I worry about them constantly. I like to joke w/ my son about I did my part for diversity but people can be cruel n I pray they don’t experience the prejudice we did when we.. his father n I..were young..starting w/ my evangelical parents. It’s all good

Gosh, it would be heavenly to spend the rest of the winter with a newborn baby. So snuggly.

Bring him over here!

What a beautiful thing to celebrate!

I understand your fears, and wish I could dismiss them. But we both know better.

Here's to a better world!
