(13,496 posts)and am hoping my daughter enters one in high school. (NYC, so there are choices.)
What is CIE?
AP really depends on the individual teachers.

(13,496 posts)I know A levels and GCSEs. Didn't realize the governing body was CIEs.
New York State has regents exams, and I feel like they're loosely based on this format.

(5,698 posts)They are sort of.
Example of CIE Art (IGCSE)
Students are given two months to develop their project for assessment, then have six hours to make it on exam day. No written test, no nothing like "what is one point perspective."
You are two art formatting and the student leads their own project.
In my area, history is all about how to develop interpretation and geography is all about development and sustainability.

(24,890 posts)In America and many countries it's only about making stuff and building stuff and selling stuff not sustainability so much.
Although the largest ball of yarn in the world is interesting.
Edit: this may be a first for me. My last two posts were in response to something you said. Totally random too. Weird.
Edit2: I just realized what it was. The first was on the thread about the satanic temple with the accompanying freak outs about them and then this one you mentioned geography one of my favorite things.

(13,496 posts)It's more of a project based programs with a focus on research and analysis. My understanding is that if you are in an IB program, you take a series of classes (so it wouldn't be an IB English/IB History class... all the courses would work in conjunction with one another to develop deeper learning skills).
THey're on par with advanced european standards.

(13,496 posts)NYC schools now. There are quite a few public and private schools that have embraced the methodology. I don't know any who have emulated CIE as of yet. (Though there is a British International School which may have A levels.)

(5,698 posts)I teach CIE and have that cert as well.
I have Arizona teacher cert, which I feel is pretty much meaningless.
Both IB and CIE put state standards and AP to shame without even trying.

(5,698 posts)It teams more with pragamatism and PBL, interpretation and synthesis rather than forcing things down a student's throat in a bubble.
AP is considered a joke internationally.
