(23,926 posts)Every morning as I greeted my second graders they would move the arrow on the chart to choose between a welcome fist bump, high five, hug, or hip bump.
Teaching ... the money sucked, but the intangible rewards were beyond measure.
However, i'm glad that I retired before shithead Republican politicians decided to make us collateral damage in one of their bullshit culture wars.

(205,472 posts)Though I remember being called as a speaker to my friend's third grade class back in the '90s (when they were studying a country I'd visited) and no one touched the kids. I had to check in at the office and there was some upset little kid waiting there and I put my arm around him, but neither his teacher or the guidance counselor did. As a visitor, I didn't know any better.

When he was in preschool all those years ago, teachers commonly hugged the kids. I remember one telling when he was perhaps 3, that they didn't hug him, as they could tell he didn't like it.
My point here is that the teachers of the very young tend to be very tuned into their charges.

(382 posts)I had a second grade teacher who bullied me mercilessly.
The bullying accompanied me until I graduated.
Not one teacher tried to stop the bullying.

(612 posts)In fact, I'm outraged to know that none of those adults intervened. They did not deserve to be in the noble vocation of teaching. And you deserved their interest and respect, bmichaelh. As I think about it, all I can do is shake my head.
