https://www.zippia.com/advice/social-security-statistics/I didnt know this, but 66 million Americans receive a social security payment every month. Also social security payments represent about 4.8% of our GDP.
Any cut to social security would impact our country much more than the GOP would want you to believe.

(16,192 posts)Yet another GOP policy that seems designed to increase societal and political tension, economic and demographic divides, economic uncertainty and economic shrinkage.
What a surprise, and any alignment between these things and the desires of Vladimir are pure coincidence.

(92,433 posts)into Social Security, like an annuity, and are ENTITLED to a payout when they retire.
This has NOTHING to do with "communism, socialism", or the other false statements pushed by the extreme right wing.
People paid into this period, no negotiation or disscussion

(6,225 posts)It's part of their doublespeak.
An entitlement is something you are entitled to...we payed in, now we expect to get a payout. It's a lot like a savings account.

(1,156 posts)kept saying that Social Security should be put in "a lockbox" so that it couldn't be compromised. Even Saturday Night Live made fun of him for that. And almost half of US voters voted for "put Social Security into the Wall Street casino" Bush the Second. People don't realize what life in the US would look like without our safety nets and take them for granted.

(21,677 posts)They want there to be as much suffering as possible - just in time for the '24 campaign season.
And once in power, Social Security and Medicare would be gone for good - plus a lot more besides (including our democracy, such as it is).

(8,291 posts)as long as I can. I have paid in SS, Medicare and Medicaid since 1976.
If they try to end it, then I want it all back RIGHT Freaking Now!
How about if 66 million of us demand our paycheck deductions back right now?
They would shit their pants! They are cowards!
They would ignore you.

(37,453 posts)just like SNAP, Foot Stamps, etc people live month to month on these but the Republicans don't seem to get it. Most of the money comes in and goes back out for food, utilities etc. They think people are getting rich

(4,463 posts)more efficiently than a tax break for someone to buy another yacht. I can never understand why people dont get this.

(15,669 posts)Nobody is dumb enough to cut benefits from those currently receiving SS.
What the republicans will propose is to reduce withholding to put more money in the pockets of hard working Americans, along with increasing the age at which you can receive SS benefits, which would start in say, 20 years. Then, in 10 years, when the SS fund has massive shortfalls, they will propose benefit cuts to future (10 years from then) retirees.

(1,156 posts)on the right are suggesting reviewing the Social Security act every five years or even every year. The people in this country are gradually waking up to the fact that the Republican party is going to do what its most extreme members want. After the supreme court picking the president in 2000, after Obama not being allowed to nominate a supreme court justice, after Trump getting his last nominee through in record time, after McConnell saying that no Democratic supreme court nominee would ever be considered again. After Roe v Wade, people are finally waking up. Hopefully there is still time.

(8,828 posts)Reagan put SS under a federal tax to cover his trickle down fiasco. And still raised taxes on workers 7 times. And still raised the hell out of our debt. Fiscal Conservatism.
