(32,095 posts)I'm thinking the GOPers are mighty confused right now. They probably don't know which pre-planned talking point to use.
As one of the Democrats (McGovern?) pointed out yesterday, this vote was all for show, anyway. Nothing but the sort of political theater we are going to be stuck with for the next two years.

(5,104 posts)despite this and similar memes that make the rounds here on DU.
What's true is too many Americans have no clue what socialism is and that's partially due to deliberate disinformation and claims that roads, schools, police and fire services, and social programs are "socialism."
It is a sad state of affairs when far-left disinformation mirrors that of the right.

(11,744 posts)That proves the point of the meme, but not in the way that the person who posted intended. The average American absolutely has NO CLUE what Socialism is. Social Welfare programs are not Socialism. Socialism is about WHO controls THE MEANS OF PRODUCTION. It has nothing to do with providing public benefits. Do the workers control the factories where they work, by means of a co-op, a public corporate structure, a state sponsored industry, etc...? if not, then we aren't talking about Socialism.
It is the fact that most people do not have any idea what Socialism entails, and only equate the Soviet Union and China with Socialism, that makes it possible for right wingers to do something like this.

(58,785 posts)Otoh, most of the socialist left has been deceiving people that Europe's capitalism-funded government programs (like our VA) are examples of socialism. So voting for this may also be promoted to those who believe that as being against Social Security. Or roads and schools like we already have, as Senator Sanders soothingly described socialism while running for president.
That'd encourage the spit they're after. Watch this channel for upcoming events.

(58,785 posts)this crazy, anxious era when political factionalists started pouring in (analogous I guess to RW factionalists flooding religious congregations). I think LW influencers had already set about redefining socialism as merely a nicer way of obtaining what we already have.
But I used to read occasional essays by SDA leaders. They know what socialism is (!) and believe in the real thing. They also used to be open that the ultimate goal of democratic socialism, after the prescribed easing into it, was progression to a socialized state, with socialized ownership and control of industry. The real thing.

(5,104 posts)I believe it is called "re-framing" by the practitioners.
Hortensis
(58,785 posts)so strongly accepted that it need not be questioned. Yes. And this particular pernicious reframing's everywhere those who search on the word socialism look.
Lol, just remembered when a coworker's basic "frame" about liberalism was so screwed that she tried to lend me one of Ann Coulter's books smearing liberals -- so I could understand what was wrong with us too. She meant well.
Oh, well. The realities of socialism that make "reframing" necessary is the reason socialism will fail. We'll just have continue to make needed changes and creating additional social benefits under our current system.
