Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsDeep down do you think Trump will be indicted?
By anyone?
I don't think so, the prosecutors all remind me of
a kid from Middle school, who use to say, "I have a big secret, its going to blow ya mind"
But I cant tell you yet, and he keeps hinting and hinting thruout the year about this big thing
he knows about.
I also think, bad people win, rich bad people win, powerful people win, it sucks
but I think he will get away with everything.

(7,432 posts)Similar to the paying of US Debt, the full faith and credit of the United States depends on indicting Donald Trump.
The citizenship must have beliefs that benefit the unity of the country. The Rule of Law is one of them. Without faith in the Rule of Law, we become a very different nation. We become ambivalent to the Constitution. We lose faith in our institutions. We think that the contract that exists between the voters and the elected officials is broken. Keeping the Rule of Law, in letter and in spirit, is a requirement for the nation to merely exist. Perhaps unfortunately, I think that there are too many prosecutors who believe the same thing. It's a common belief, and because prosecutors believe it, they'll bring charges, because THAT is one of the true expressions of sovereignty and self-governing. Prosecutions must prevail.

I think Garland appointed Jack Smith to do what needs to be done, and Garland knows this ain't his cup of tea, but Jack Smith drinks gallons of that kind of tea.

From what we know (which isn't enough), they seem to have good cases in DC, NY, GA & FL.
I've heard a couple of respected legal minds say recently that you do not convene a grand jury unless the chances of getting an indictment are around 90%.
Therefore, chances of a single grand jury not returning an indictment are roughly 10% (one in ten)
On that basis, the chances of all four of those grand juries not returning an indictment would roughly calculate to be about 0.01%. So 99.99% chance of indictment on that basis. Reality is probably less than that because of how high profile the case is and we have Republicans who will put their thumb on the scale wherever they can.
However, heavy odds from that are he gets indicted.
It is in the GOP's interest that he get indicted because it opens the door to 2024 candidates who will have a better shot at winning. They'll cut his throat.
Does that mean we get a conviction? Waste of time speculating until we see the case.
Does that mean he might go to jail? I think he'll run before it comes to that.

Everyone knows that if a single MAGA jerk gets on the jury Trump will go free. Evidence will not make any difference to these imbeciles and our system allows them to ignore it and vote their prejudices instead.

We've already demonstrated to future would-be coup plotters that if they're just a bit smarter and more organized than Trump (hardly a high bar) that our "justice" system will be too damned slow and toothless to stop them.

I have zero faith in Letitia James, Bragg, Georgia prosecutors or Garland. But hey they did get Cohen and Weiselberg. I think its all a dog and pony show. I think anyone who actually thinks he will be, well you're adorable in your naivete.

(7,541 posts)Our justice system has never been particularly capable of jailing rich politically-connected white people. It has repeatedly crumbled when faced with political pressure and failed at it's mission. The Great Sedition Trial is a good example of justice denied by political cronyism as multiple members of Congress were involved with aiding freaking German saboteurs and afterward exerted pressure on DOJ to end the investigation. About the only time these rich politically-connected individuals go to jail is when they steal from other rich people, like Madoff or they constitute a serious threat to other rich politically-connected people such as Epstein.
Sure there are a few exceptions but follow this adage and you will be correct 95% of the time...I call 'em like I see 'em.

(1,264 posts)Just a little daydream, for when I go to my happy place, and I'm sure most any nit-picker could find plenty of holes, and we all could still be appalled at the course of justice not being properly followed, but...
A SWAT team drops into Merde-a-Lago, and within two minutes TFG is cuffed, gagged, hooded, and loaded onto a helicopter. He's then taken to Guantanamo and put into solitary confinement to serve five hundred thousand consecutive life terms as a traitor, international terrorist and mass murderer. And he's never allowed to pass a message to the public for the rest of his days. And we never have to see his voice or any new video ever again.
And I'm being kind. Look what happened to Osama bin Laden, who was only responsible for a few thousand deaths, instead of hundreds of thousands.

(9,070 posts)1.) Indicting the orange asshole will cause lots of violence; threats to anyone involved in the process
2.) For many people, simply taking down the family business would be punishment enough
3.) There are still LOTS of wealthy and powerful people who will continue protection
4.) The GOP has rigged the courts, not to mention the hung juries that would result
5.) He could release lots of intel if convicted
At most he will lose some cases against his company, and maybe some state crimes, but none will result in jail time.

(4,913 posts)All we can do is wait. The same goes for Garland and Smith. I still believe their investigations are smoking gun cases that must be prosecuted. I have lost a lot of faith in the SNDY and Manhattan office. It's their job to prosecute financial crimes and they have failed for decades. Corruption? Rudy and Trump, best friends who were on the opposite sides of law for years in NY??????

(9,894 posts)not on the surface. I will be very surprised if he is indicted. And I don't care. I just want him gone by whatever means legal. Off the national stage for good. Jail, resounding loss in election, narrow loss in election, trips and breaks his leg, psychotic break, long COVID... Just get him out of here once and for all and that will be enough for me.
Of course, I think he's a symptom not the problem, so we'll still be stuck with the fertile soil he sprang from.
