Kristen Neel praised Australia's "Christian, male president" on Twitter, before copping a barrage of responses and eventually deleting her account. Picture via Twitter
BARACK Obama's "four more years'' victory tweet may have become the most retweeted message of all time, but last night one American teenager's misguided views on Australia were lighting up the twittersphere down under.
Clearly disappointed with the election result, 18-year-old Georgia republican Kristen Neel joined the throngs of American Twitter users claiming they were moving to Australia to escape Obama's presidency.
Unfortunately, she got a few facts wrong.
"I'm moving to Australia, because their president is a Christian and actually supports what he says,'' she tweeted.
Neel's tweet quickly went viral as bemused Aussies retweeted it more than 1400 times, many pointing out that Australia actually has an atheist, female Prime Minister.
"Our Prime Minister is a woman, an atheist who lives with a man she hasn't married. I don't think you'd like it here,'' tweeted Ian Cuthbertson, TV editor at The Australian.
"I think you meant Antarctica. Move there,'' tweeted @post_rock0.
"Congratulations on being the dumbest person in the world,'' tweeted @Patrickavenell.

(32,886 posts)Are you fighting for that to be the reality for women like the teenager in question? Your argument strongly suggests that you are.
This is one of the worst misses you have made on DU, Sea. You are indirectly and in some cases directly arguing the Republican case now.
Whether she recognizes it or not, the person described in the OP is fighting for a vision of women where they have no reproductive choice, no ability to vote, no ability to be a self determined person.
The DUer you attacked is noting that with appropriate scorn, and you attacked them.
YOU missed this one BADLY
Firebirds01

Hence Romney's statement of "if you are going to hire women."

Even though this Kristen Neel girl is a few brain cells short of being a professor, we really can't call her a whore (or whore-like - i.e., concubine) and still maintain the higher moral ground on these lines of argument.
Dummy up. Let's not stoop to asinine, conservative grade school bullshit name calling unless it's someone doing real harm.
stevenleser
(32,886 posts)If you sign up for a philosophy that denies women reproductive choice, that denies women opportunities in the workplace, that with barely a wink-wink advocates that women be assigned the role of stay at home mother with no choice, you are relegating women to the status of concubine.

(8,317 posts)There's a thing called Wikipedia, and a thing called a dictionary.
Use it.
whathehell
(29,067 posts)There's this thing called being a misogynist...Look THAT up
in Wikipedia and a dictionary.
Major Nikon
(36,827 posts)noun
hatred, dislike, or mistrust of women.
http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/misogyny
Pretty straightforward. If you're a misogynist, you hate women.
Now let's look up another word.
noun
1. attitudes or behavior based on traditional stereotypes of sexual roles.
2. discrimination or devaluation based on a person's sex, as in restricted job opportunities; especially, such discrimination directed against women.
http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/sexism
Notice that while the definitions might involve similar things, they are most certainly not the same. A person can utter a sexist statement without being a misogynist. So while it might be true that most misogynists say things that are sexist, it certainly is not true that everyone who utters a sexist phrase is a misogynist. The assumption to the contrary demonstrates a fundamental misunderstanding of what misogyny really means.
whathehell
(29,067 posts)Do you split hairs like this when it comes to "the treatment" of blacks or gays?
Can I call someone a "fag" or a "nigger" without necessarily being a "homophobe" or a "racist"?
Nah, I didn't think so.
Some other words for you to look up:
1. Hypocrite
2. Bullshit.
Major Nikon
(36,827 posts)I believe the word in question, was "concubine", not "whore". I realize your false equivalency fallacy relies on the conflation of "concubine" with other words. The great thing about dictionaries is that if you know how to use them, they provide an excellent way to educate and improve literacy. If you don't know how to use them, they can also be used to reinforce subliterate ideas.
Now, if I look up the word "concubine", this is what I get:
con·cu·bine? ?/ˈkɒŋkyəˌbaɪn, ˈkɒn-/ Show Spelled[kong-kyuh-bahyn, kon-]
noun
1. a woman who cohabits with a man to whom she is not legally married, especially one regarded as socially or sexually subservient; mistress.
2. (among polygamous peoples) a secondary wife, usually of inferior rank.
3. (especially formerly in Muslim societies) a woman residing in a harem and kept, as by a sultan, for sexual purposes.
Most people understand the concept that English words often have multiple meanings. Dictionaries list definitions in numbered order with the most common usage at the top, followed by the next most common usage. Note that this particular reference lists the most common useage of the word "concubine" as meaning essentially "mistress", not "whore", as you falsely assumed. If you work your way down to definition #3, you get something that at least starts to approach something similar to "whore". So is that what the poster meant? Nothing in the context suggests this. In the absense of context the only reasonable inferrence a person can make is definition #1.
So while one might be able to successfully make the argument that calling someone a mistress without cause borders on sexism, it sure as hell isn't the equivelent of calling a black person "nigger", at least within the realm of what most people would call reality.
I would be glad to look up the other words you listed for you, but I get the impression they were only included to serve the purposes of name calling and defammation, which is ironically the very same charge you are making against the poster in question. One might even call it bullshit hypocrisy.
Cheers!
whathehell
(29,067 posts)and "given" all that, it seems I'll have to "show you the door"

Major Nikon
(36,827 posts)I have zero interest in trying to pursue reasonable discussion with someone who feels the need to resort to name calling as a substitute for adult level civil debate. My only interest was pointing out obvious bullshit. If you actually did put me on ignore, I can now do this just as effectively with one less source of childish retorts.
Cheers!

No, one cannot just move there.
If you're not a political refugee whose life is endangered in their native land, you have the following options:
1. Immediate family willing to sponsor you.
2. A job offer in writing from a Canadian employer...who in most cases has to prove the offer cannot be filled by an equally-qualified Canadian citizen.
3. Assessment through their "points" system as to your suitability to immigrate...and it's no cakewalk.
4. If you speak French fluently, you may be able to live in Quebec under their special provincial scheme.
They don't accept military resisters anymore. They've sent back several who went AWOL over the Iraq/Afghan wars.
Commonwealth citizens (UK, Aussies, New Zealanders etc) can immigrate under special schemes (mostly university students), but even they're not guaranteed residency.
No, you cannot just show up at the border at Douglas, BC, Windsor, ON, etc. and just say "I'm gonna live here."
I imagine it's much the same in Australia.

treestar
(82,383 posts)The average American knows little of immigration restrictions. Canada speaks English and is like America relative to other countries, so it makes a good substitute if we're wanting another country to live in. Same reason they pick Australia - they speak English, are descended from the English common law system like us - gee they must be willing to take us (if we're white, which I assume is also at the bottom of freeper expectations).
I think Australia might take some skilled Americans but it's probably limited, and only the freepers who qualified could go. I'd kind of like to see it - when the freeper discovers he must turn in his guns and pay taxes for universal health care.
whathehell
(29,067 posts)because the link I gave, if you noticed, referenced their country, not ours.
I'm sorry if you imagine Canada and/or Australia to be some sort of "freeper free" nations,
as you have only to look at the history of Australia, especially, to be disillusioned.
Sorry, bro, I really couldn't care LESS about immigrating to either place. Hell, I have
have "right of return" status to Europe and I'm not that enthused...Get my drift?
Cheers.
treestar
(82,383 posts)I think on the US side it might have to do with the Vietnam era draft dodgers. Canada took them, so the average thinks Canada is a place where we can get general political asylum.
I don't think those nations are freeper free - I did not say that, but am aware they have national health plans and so that the freepers presumably would find them no better than the US - that's if they knew anything. And Australia has gun control.
I'd like to live in countries like those - and their freepers seem unable to influence things as much as they do here.
Europe is another story but it does seem saner than the US. Still, I wouldn't actually immigrate - family comes first!

(87 posts)I'm just glad when I was a kid her age I didn't have access to Twitter or I might have done or said something stupid as well. I don't want to attack her, rather the mind set that makes Republicans unaware of the rest of the world and the rest of this country. It's absurd sometimes funny but to tell you the truth it scares the hell out of me. Ignorance hate and fear plus manipulation of the masses through demagoguery can (and has led) to some of the worst catastrophes humanity has ever endured. Rush, Hannity they don't really believe the crap they say. It's just an easy and effective way to make money, what they fail to realize is that their followers believe the crap they spew. Then when reality confronts them the natural response is to resort to magical thinking and paranoid delusions. Even at the height of Bush hatred I never read on these boards or anywhere a call to violent acts against the citizenry that voted for him. It's disturbing.

Obviously, she's absorbed some bad info from her family, her peers and her church. She's too young to really process it all, and I wouldn't be surprised to see her become a flaming lefty in a few years.
Ironically, the thread I was reading before this concerned bullying. And yet here is everyone bashing the shit out of her. Disgusting.

(36,827 posts)The problem with using the "What if this was your own daughter?" card is that it simply reduces the discussion to an appeal to emotion rather than one based on reason.
I might consider a lot of things differently if this were my daughter. The reason is because I have an obvious emotional attachment to that person which is almost certainly going to affect my objectivity.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Appeal_to_emotion
There's probably a few very good reasons why this person doesn't necessarily deserve all the rhetoric being hurled at her, but "What if this was your own daughter?" isn't one of them.
Cheers!

Aussies laughing their heads off over anti-Obama teen girl.
http://www.democraticunderground.com/10021762663
REASON FOR ALERT:
This post is disruptive, hurtful, rude, insensitive, over-the-top, or otherwise inappropriate. (See Community Standards.)
ALERTER'S COMMENTS:
Okay, everybody had their laugh over this. But what does it say about the people here when we launch all these personal attacks against this poor girl who didn't ask for any of this?
You served on a randomly-selected Jury of DU members which reviewed this post. The review was completed at Thu Nov 8, 2012, 02:12 PM, and the Jury voted 1-5 to LEAVE IT.
Juror #1 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE and said: Stupid alert.
Juror #2 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE and said: She publicly posted! I see no problem.
Juror #3 voted to HIDE IT and said: Girl is a kid. Shouldn''t be held up to such scorn.
Juror #4 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE and said: No explanation given
Juror #5 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE and said:
Actions have consequences and she is an adult.
Juror #6 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE and said: Does the alerter really think this idiot is reading these posts?
Thank you very much for participating in our Jury system, and we hope you will be able to participate again in the future.

(813 posts)First of all, Australia is an independent constitutional monarchy within the British Commonwealth with Queen Elizabeth II as Head of State, represented by Governor-General Quentin Bryce, who is female.
As has been noted, the Prime Minister is Julia Gillard, who is also female and an atheist.
The position of "president" is not used in the Australian Government...who have a slightly-modified British Westminster-derived form of government (parliamentary democracy).
If this young woman hates the Democrats, she wouldn't like the governing Australian Labor Party either.
No wonder our Australian cousins are laughing at Ms Neel.

I think it's most likely the young lady may have John Howard in mind when she posted her original tweet; however Mr. Howard has been out of office since 2007. So, she's about five years too late.
