Neo-Nazi homeschool isn't breaking any laws: Ohio officials

The Ohio homeschoolers who are feeding Nazi propaganda to children are not doing anything illegal, according to Ohio Department of Education officials in a statement obtained by VICE News on Thursday.

"Logan and Katja Lawrence were unmasked ... as the operators of a neo-Nazi homeschool network with thousands of members, known as Dissident Homeschool on Telegram, by VICE News and the Huffington Post based on research from an anti-fascist research group called the Anonymous Comrades Collective," reported David Gilbert. "The Lawrences openly advocate white supremacist ideologies with the aim of making the children they teach, they’ve said, 'become wonderful Nazis.' Katja Lawrence said she initially started the group because she 'was having a rough time finding Nazi-approved school material for [her] homeschool children,' and has shared lesson plans that include Hitler quotes, pictures of a cake she baked for Hitler’s birthday, and a recording of her children saying 'sieg heil' in unison." Subsequent reporting found Logan Lawrence dressed in blackface in high school.

Ohio officials opened an investigation into the homeschoolers — but according to a new statement given to VICE News, the investigation has concluded with no action against the Nazi parents.

It breaks my heart to know that my father fought against this evil and yet there are those idiots that subscribe to this evil and teach their kids to be "good little nazis".

I just don't understand the mindset of these people.

My uncle's body is somewhere on the bottom of the South Pacific Ocean.

My dad was an 18 yr old tail gunner flying the Burma Hump.
A miracle he lived through it.

These stories about the nazis returning are hard to take.

If communities can become incised by kids walking to the park alone and interfere with parental rights for their children's' well being , then communities can also seek to protect their kids by denying nazi-home-schooling.

There are laws about child endangerment; use them!

The emergence of the group has led to calls for a revision of the way Ohio oversees homeschooling. Huffpost reported that parents planning to homeschool must submit “a brief outline of the intended curriculum” and a “list of teaching materials” to the local public school superintendent.

“Then, if the ‘home education plan’ meets the basic requirements of state law, the superintendent must excuse the child from public school attendance,” Huffpost wrote.

Getting Started
Once families make the decision to pursue home education, they should contact the superintendent of the school district in which they reside and provide notice of their intent to educate their child at home. (Districts may have a specific notification form they suggest you use.)

As part of the notification of intent to educate your child at home parents will agree to:

Provide annual notice of home education;
Provide 900 hours of instruction per year; and
Provide an assessment of student work and progress
Parents will also be asked to provide the following information:

An outline of intended curriculum;
Assurance that the curriculum includes
Language, reading, spelling and writing;
Geography, history of the United States and Ohio, and national, state, and local government;
Mathematics;
Science;
Health and physical education;
Fine arts, including music; and
First aid, safety and fire prevention.
A list of teaching materials; and
Assurance the home teacher has a high school diploma or the equivalent or is working under the guidance of a person holding a bachelor’s degree.
