Man Who Shot Gabrielle Giffords Gets Life in Prison
The man who shot former Democratic Rep. Gabrielle Giffords of Arizona and killed six others in 2011, was sentenced Thursday to life in prison without parole in a dramatic hearing that featured Giffords husband telling the gunman he and his wife were done thinking about you, CNN reported.
At a hearing in federal court in Tuscon, Ariz., Judge Larry Burns sentenced Jared Lee Loughner to seven consecutive life terms, plus 140 years, without the possibility of parole.
Giffords husband, Mark Kelly, an astronaut, spoke for Giffords during the sentencing. "You tried to create a world as dark and evil as your own. Remember this: You failed," he said, according to The Arizona Republic.
Kelly and Giffords stood at a podium, holding hands, while Kelly spoke: "Mr. Loughner, you may have put a bullet through her head, but you have not put a dent in her spirit, and her (ability to do good)."
He added: "Gabby and I are done thinking about you."
