How fed up are San Franciscans with the city's problems? New S.F. Chronicle poll finds pervasive glo

San Francisco has long seen skirmishes among factions of its overwhelmingly Democratic electorate, but fissures are widening, positions are hardening and the public sees little hope of fixing the chronic problems that have plagued the city for decades, according to one of the most comprehensive surveys of city residents ever done.

Even as San Francisco gradually recovers from the crushing blow of the COVID-19 pandemic, a majority of respondents expressed deep worry, frustration and continued pessimism about civic life in the city, The Chronicle’s SFNext poll of 1,653 residents found.

“I’m getting kind of fed up with the city,” said poll respondent Dae Echols, 53, who expects that the high cost of living will force him to move elsewhere when he retires. “I just remember the hippie generation, and it was all about, take care of your friends, brotherly love. And that is totally gone.”

The result is a city that has already ejected from office its district attorney and three school board members. Unhappiness with law enforcement has led to rallies by Asian Americans protesting violence against their elders and a lack of police protection and prosecutions. Frustration over homelessness and its impact on street life in the Castro district led to a threat by the neighborhood’s merchants’ association to withhold business taxes.

File this under "well, duh." When the cost of living becomes out of reach for people, you are going to have urban problems.
The idiocy of letting major corporations buy up all housing and leasing it back at prices no one but the 1% can afford is Exhibit A of the causes for SF's ills. I'm not saying there isn't more going on here, but it's the single biggest chunk of it.

Voters will punish the current office holder, they don’t care who replaces them either, just want to fire the current one. Lightfoot just found out in Chicago. We’ll see proactive law enforcement candidates make a comeback in more cities.

The homeless thing is out of control and the crime is getting worst. I live on a sleepy block in SF and my neighbors Catalytic converter got stolen recently. I heard a noise outside that night and when i got up saw a car speeding down the street. I keep one of my cars parked in my garage. And took my garage down opener out of the car parked in front because the thieves are stealing the garage down openers from outdoor parked cars. Last year I installed a camera in front of my house and in my backyard. I don’t like being paranoid. And i was furious over the recalls. Let them serve out their terms and get re elected or thrown out. All that money spend for the recall pissed me off. And all these homeless people come to SF from other areas. They know the social services are there for them. One guy I spoke to told me he came from Missouri because he heard he would be taken care of in SF.

I get offers everyday from corporations to buy my inherited family house and I would never sell to a corporation unless they offered me $1 million over my asking price.
