https://m.arcamax.com/currentnews/newsheadlines/s-2791672?fsA. also found support from the Northwest Abortion Access Fund, boosted by thousands of new donors and pledges from Seattle, King County and Oregon in the months following last May's leak of the Supreme Court's draft decision on Roe.
The fund booked her flight and hotel, paying for both, as well as the abortion. The nonprofit also arranged for rides during her stay, and picked up the tab for breakfast and sandwich fixings delivered to her room.
"They've kind of made it so the only thing I really have to do is get there and heal," A. said.
'A different country'
A few nights later, A. sat on a bed with her sister in a Renton hotel room, near the clinic where she had an appointment the next morning. Her arrival in a place where abortion is considered a right, rather than murder, seemed to awe her.
"I went to a different country today," she said.

(42,001 posts)Ive never been shy about my love for the coastal South. Its a rich, fascinating, deeply soulful place and is simultaneously the batshit craziest place I have ever been. It gets in you and you become it, gators and fire ants and snakes and armadillos and music and magic. And all those stupid hate-filled, religion-based, racially insane things? Also true.
Seattle is cool in all ways. Nothing here eats you or causes a rash. People are polite and reserved in ways that make them look at me like Im nuts sometimes after nearly forty years. Ill talk to a rock. Ill ask hows your mamanem in the grocery line. Once theyve figured Im not dangerous they cooperate but dont want to compare lives the way Southerners do. They mind their own business. They forget you exist. Ive lived in my current neighborhood for four years and hardly know my neighbors. Its lonely.
That said, I completely understand the Cascadia movement, the West Coast version of MTGs divorce. Were tired of the red state bullshit and smile at the knowledge that, if she got her wish, wed control most of the big ports and about 70% of the agriculture. And we arent afraid to let them fuck around and find out, and help those who need the things those fools take away.
Note I say we. Ive made my choices. Sometimes I know what Ive missed by immigrating from that crazy country though.

(1,671 posts)You hear about the Seattle chill, because we don't let you into our personal lives quickly. We're still happy you're here.
But despite the fact that it's a different country we also have boatloads dickheads, many of them homegrown. On the other hand I'm with Sherman Alexi, if I ever have to go to the South I'm going to make sure I have all my shots, and maybe get the ones required for travel to a third world country.

(17,997 posts)I grew up in the green rolling hills of TN. The food and culture are ingrained in me, but I wouldn't live there again if my life depended on it.
Years ago on our first week here in VT, I called to order takeout...."I'd like to place a take out order please"..."OK"...and then silence. I didn't get the usual cultural cues I was use to like..."OK, honey, what can I get cha?"
The second time was "the dance". When two southerners walk up to a checkout line at exactly the same time, there's a little cultural dance we do...."oh, I'm sorry, you go ahead"...."oh, that's alright, you go next"...."no, I insist, you go next" and so forth until finally someone goes first. In VT it's "oh, I'm sorry, you go ahead"...."thanks!" and they step right in front of you. Not rude. Just a different culture I've come to understand and enjoy. They can't do BBQ worth shit and cob smoked ham IS NOT PROPER COUNTRY HAM, but I wouldn't live anywhere else.

(1,463 posts)1 cup ketchup
¼ cup water
1 tablespoon pepper
1 tablespoon onion powder
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
1 tablespoon light corn syrup
1 tablespoon granulated garlic
2 teaspoons celery seeds
½ teaspoon liquid smoke
Ribs
5 tablespoons packed light brown sugar
1 teaspoon salt
½ teaspoon pepper
2 racks (2½-3 pounds each) baby back pork ribs, trimmed and membrane removed
1 cup cornmeal
6 corncobs, kernels removed and reserved for another use
For the sauce: Whisk all ingredients together in medium bowl to combine; set aside.
For the ribs: Combine sugar, salt and pepper in bowl. Pat ribs dry with paper towels and rub with sugar mixture; set aside. Using large piece of heavy-duty aluminum foil, wrap cornmeal in foil packet and cut several vent holes in top.
Open bottom vents of charcoal grill halfway. Place 13-by-9-inch disposable aluminum roasting pan on one side of grill and fill pan with 2 quarts water. Arrange 3 quarts unlit charcoal briquettes on opposite side of grill. Place cobs on top of unlit briquettes. Light large chimney starter filled halfway with charcoal briquettes (3 quarts). When top coals are covered with ash, pour over cobs and unlit coals. Place cornmeal packet on coals. Set cooking grate in place, cover and open lid vent halfway. Heat grill until hot and cornmeal is smoking, about 5 minutes.
Clean and oil cooking grate. Place ribs, meat side up, on cool part of grill opposite coals. Cover, positioning lid vent over ribs, and cook until ribs are deep red and tender, 3½ to 4 hours, rotating ribs 180 degrees every hour. During last 30 minutes of cooking, baste ribs every 10 minutes, rotating ribs each time.
Transfer ribs to carving board, tent loosely with foil, and let rest for 15-20 minutes. Cut ribs in between bones and serve, passing remaining sauce separately.
Serves four to six.
Cook's note: A gas grill can't do these corncob ribs justice, so please use charcoal. Heinz Organic works well for the sauce recipe.

(1,463 posts)When we finally returned, we each said the same thing.
It was like we'd time traveled back in time and ended up behind the Iron Curtain of the former USSR.
Along our journey we found an enormous sense of community within reasoned, progressive, caring people.
We were each pulled simultaneously in the direction of myriads of opportunities that desired our participation wherever we roamed, from Eugene, Oregon all the way to a three story timber lodge on Vancouver Island, BC within the UNESCO Clayoquot Sound Biosphere Reserve.
If our daughter and partner were interested in joining us... we'd move.
We'd considered partnering in the purchase and operation of the Westfir Lodge, in Westfir, Oregon, in addition to the 3 Legged Crane Pub and Brewhouse in Oakridge. Westfir and Oakridge are bicycle proving grounds for world-class competitors.
Oddly enough at the time, the proprietor was the ex-fiancé of a local Louisiana "guitar hero" Buddy Flett that still performs locally and tours occasionally. Further, the ex-fiance had also operated a booth selling small batch organic goods next to my father-in-law's produce stand at our Farmers Market for the prior four or five years. Super-smart world-class lady!
We discovered these pleasant anomalies wherever we travelled. We were astonished as time and time again we were blown away by the number of kindred souls.
For us, the Pacific Northwest was a true revelation. It showed us an existence that had been only fabled desires prior to our journey.
We're forever changed!

(1,558 posts)What the hell are we witnessing?
We need to make DC and Puerto Rico states to get the the extra senators!
I was amazed when I heard how Lincoln split the Dakota Territory into two states when the territory itself had not reached the necessary qualifications necessary for statehood consideration just to get the 4 extra senators.
We need to start playing for the long haul. We are behind the game with respect to small ball politics. Were better, but still need to shore up our game.

(16,609 posts)It's a college town (Washington State University) in eastern Washington, close to the Idaho state line. That's a pretty conservative region, and a town with a large state university is likely to be a liberal oasis, relatively speaking.
Carbondale, home of Southern Illinois University, is in a similar situation. As the school's name implies, Carbondale is way down south (6 hours south of Chicago), in a mostly red area. States that are a relatively short drive from Carbondale include Missouri, Kentucky, Arkansas, Indiana, Mississippi and Tennessee. A new reproductive clinic that opened there last fall was the first, but probably not the last, abortion care provider to set up in Carbondale, and the town seems poised to vecome an abortion hub for patients from surrounding states with restrictive abortion laws.
I wouldn't be at all surprised to see other college towns like Carbondalecand Pullman becoming centers for reproductive care.

Looks like we are going to enshrine LGBT rights into law and also repeal the 1931 abortion ban to get it off the books.
MI House and Senate well on their way to doing both.

(2,277 posts)do NOT let them go anywhere abortion isn't legal. You think, "If my daughter gets pregnant, I'll just bring home for an abortion.,"
What if she starts to miscarry? What if she has an ectopic pregnancy? The only treatment for that is abortion. Dead daughter

Move now before the Great Climate Exodus.
At that point there just may be immigration controls into the Great Lakes Region.
