Alston learned about the racially insensitive message after his girlfriend picked up his 2017 Volkswagen Passat over the weekend from Leith Volkswagen of Raleigh. The car was due for an oil change, Alston said. The car is the second that Alston has purchased from the dealership.
Just to see something like that when youre spending money at a business place, its kind of absurd for the day, Alston said.

Leith Volkswagen of Raleigh issued the following statement about the incident:
On Saturday, February 25, Leith Volkswagen learned that an offensive racial message was printed on Next Service Due stickers placed in customer vehicles that day, the dealership wrote. We immediately launched an investigation and determined that our third-party cleaning crew had accessed our equipment after-hours on Friday evening and created the offensive message.
In the 48 hours since this incident occurred, we have contacted all 11 impacted customers to apologize, we have terminated the third-party cleaning company, we have posted a public apology on our Facebook page, and we have taken internal steps to ensure this cannot happen again. We are deeply sorry that this incident occurred.
Leith has since terminated its agreement with the cleaning company and taken action to make sure this doesnt happen again.
Leith told WRAL News, it was one of the cleaning employees underage children who came to work with them who was responsible.

(15,787 posts)The only addition I wish the company would do is give the 12 customers a year of free oil changes.

(65,010 posts)The cleaning crew could access the maintenance program? That seems dumb.

(21,106 posts)but this doesn't pass the smell test. So, you're telling me that an underage child created this "message" and slipped it past the "adults" in the room?
At least the company was terminated.

(61,599 posts)I find it hard to believe that the cleaning crew - a third party contractor - had access to the dealership's machine that prints these reminder stickers. The dealership's story is that the child of a cleaning crew member did this. And nobody in the dealership's maintenance team noticed that the machine had been tampered with? The next day they printed a bunch of reminder stickers that had the n word in all caps (seems like this would stand out) and put them on the cars of customers who just happened to be Black?
I don't believe the story.

(9,073 posts)And let's be honest, this sounds exactly what a crappy kid might find hilarious. YouTube is filled with, "It's just a prank, bro!" stuff that isn't nearly as amusing as they think it is.
Wonder what the conversation at home was like after the parent lost their job.

(42,552 posts)You'd have to be logged into an employee's account to do it, though. Maybe it was done by the kid of someone on the cleaning crew, but it seems like office procedures were also very lax.

(4,898 posts)These oil change reminders are normally printed by the technicians IN the shop or quick lube rack, not on the lane or at the service advisor's desk. This former technician is NOT buying this story; someone in that VW shop did this.
Another question, if we are to believe their "explanation." Why were "underage children" allowed to wander around inside an auto repair shop? There is a world of things in that shop that can easily injure or even kill a child.

(61,599 posts)I was skeptical (see above) and your post confirms my suspicions. The stickers are printed for each customer, right? They're customized with each car's mileage. And the technician didn't notice the big block letter n word?!
I don't believe it and I'm disappointed in my local media for not investigating further. I think the dealership knows exactly who did this and is covering up with this story.
