As president, Donald Trump made some of his most thoroughly dishonest speeches at the annual Conservative Political Action Conference.
As he embarks on another campaign for the presidency, Trump delivered another CPAC doozy Saturday night.
Trumps lengthy address to the right-wing gathering in Maryland was filled with wildly inaccurate claims about his own presidency, Joe Bidens presidency, foreign affairs, crime, elections and other subjects.
Here is a fact check of 23 of the false claims Trump made. (And thats far from the total.)
While Trump criticized Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg, who has been investigating Trumps company, he claimed that killings are taking place at a number like nobodys ever seen, right in Manhattan.
Facts First: It isnt even close to true that Manhattan is experiencing a number of killings that nobody has ever seen. The region classified by the New York Police Department as Manhattan North had 43 reported murders in 2022; that region had 379 reported murders in 1990 and 306 murders in 1993. The Manhattan South region had 35 reported murders in 2022 versus 124 reported murders in 1990 and 86 murders in 1993. New York City as a whole is also nowhere near record homicide levels; the city had 438 reported murders in 2022 versus 2,262 in 1990 and 1,927 in 1993.
Manhattan North had just eight reported murders this year through February 19, while Manhattan South had one. The city as a whole had 49 reported murders.

(16,396 posts)If it pops into his head, it spews out of his mouth. He has no interest in or concern with whether any of it jibes with facts or reality.
It's a very weird way to go through life, imo, assuming you can say absolutely anything, about absolutely anything, with no regard to truth or accuracy. I don't think he would have ever gotten away with it to the extent that he has if he hasn't been born into so much wealth and privilege. Unfortunately, it's been an ingrained habit now for probably his entire adult life. I don't think he is capable of changing, even if he wanted to (and of course he will never see any reason why he should).
There are those who will say that all politicians lie, but I think the sheer extent of his lying is unusual, if not unique. (I'm talking about in comparison with most politicians, not a freak like Santos lol). The fact that he literally does not even seem to know, much less care, if he's lying or not seems especially noteworthy to me.
I think most people who lie a lot choose to do so deliberately, because it serves their purpose at the time. Liars make choices to lie about specific things, for specific reasons. Trump doesn't make conscious decisions about lying. He just blurts out whatever comes to mind, period. I honestly think he often lies more or less unconsciously, because he doesn't really differentiate between the thoughts in his head and objective reality. "Reality," to him, is whatever he thinks it is at any particular moment in time, and the phrase "objective reality" has no meaning for him.
Sorry to go on at such length about this. I have a deep interest in psychopathology, and Trump's pathology is a source of endless fascination to me. I know not everyone feels that way!
