Wisconsin's Native vote could factor in state Supreme Court race.
MILWAUKEE - Although most laws in Indian Country are determined by tribal and federal courts, voting advocates are trying to inform Native voters about the importance of the April 4 Wisconsin Supreme Court election.
Members of the nonpartisan Wisconsin Native Vote, a part of Wisconsin Conservation Voices, held an informational session with about two dozen Ho-Chunk Nation citizens at the tribes Milwaukee office this month.
They were served Indian tacos and greeted with the organizations tagline of sko vote den, playing off a popular saying in Indian Country of skoden, slang for lets go then.
Milwaukee County is home to the states largest Native population from tribes around the state and the country.
While Census figures indicate a Native American population of about 7,300 in Milwaukee, tribal officials said the number could be actually closer to 20,000 because of inaccurate Census counts.
