NBC News presidential historian Michael Beschloss dubbed Florida Governor Ron DeSantis (R) a local Mussolini in a rant targeting the Republican as more of a threat to Democrats than Donald Trump.
While discussing Trumps various criminal probes and how they will affect his 2024 run over the weekend on MSNBC, Beschloss said the former president has the survival abilities of a cockroach, but pointed to DeSantis referred to as Rick DeSantis as the pressing threat among Republicans, comparing him to fascist Benito Mussolini.
Beschloss said:
Look at what Rick DeSantis has done in Florida. He was known as a s sort of nondescript political leader and member of Congress. Suddenly, he really has tried to turn himself into a local Mussolini in Florida with the book banning and the brutal tactics and even this week this suggestion that bloggers have to register with the state for the honor of writing about the governor and other political leaders. We have to call this what this is. This is fascism and authoritarianism that goes beyond even what Trump has talked about.
DeSantis has targeted books deemed explicit in public schools, leading to accusations he is seeking to target LGBTQ and Black history-related materials. The latest controversy Florida finds itself in though is a bill introduced by a state senator Republican Jason Brodeur that would require bloggers to file a report with the state if they are writing about the governor or other administration officials.

(8,817 posts)that there are countless "Brain Lazy" people out there, who must find it excruciatingly painful to think for themselves, and prefer the profoundly easier route of wanting someone to not only to tell them WHAT to think, but, also, quite literally, what NOT to think..................
That was shown every day in Rush Limbaugh's propaganda when he would say to his viewers: "Let me tell you how to think about that"
A Remedial course in Brainwashing, or at best, Brainwashing 101...........

AND, add to that, the racist angle, which explains even more about this "New Republican" crowd of White Nationalists........
Lyndon B. Johnson said it best:
President Lyndon B. Johnson once said, "If you can convince the lowest white man he's better than the best colored man, he won't notice you're picking his pocket. Hell, give him somebody to look down on, and he'll empty his pockets for you."

Deplorable depravity runs the show, we're one of 26 states run by the Nat-C Fascists.

I guess Hooters was started in Florida so I'll give them that one.

(1,138 posts)I wish that more people understood this. About one third of voters either want authoritarian control (MAGA Republicans), or are OK with authoritarian control (corporate Republicans). And about one third of voters don't really care as long as they get their hamberders and sportsball (they don't even bother to vote). Really only a little over one third of voters nationwide have proven that they will vote to keep democracy. As in-your-face as Trump was, still about one third of voters couldn't be bothered to vote. Of course many areas and around half of the states are either strongly authoritarian or can be gerrymandered/suppressed to be authoritarian. At least nationally I think that the only solution is voter education.
