(70,501 posts)The real story that is being ignored is that the Ohio EPA and the Ohio DNR should have been
over seeing the clean up and they work for the Republican Governor of OH Mike DeWine. I
also have some questions about letting the vinyl chloride burn off. The environmental clean up
contractor and or N & S might have let the chemicals burn off because that was cheaper way
to do it and by burning it the toxins were spread over a much bigger area.

(77 posts)When a bearing fails, the friction makes the axle heat to red hot, to yellow hot, and white hot---where steel actually melts. The axle support point obviously collapseas, and the entire wheel assembly (bogie/wheel set) falls to the ground. And digs in with all the momentum of the train cars behind and all the weight of the bad car. Think anti-tank devices--hedgehogs Everything will try to stop instantly, which is impossible. cf: physics
Anyone here remember big ads in Life et al from the Timkin Roller Bearing Company back in the 50's?
Timken was much better than "journal bearings". see: http://edge.rit.edu/edge/P14453/public/Research/2-_LEADER_-_Understanding_Journal_Bearings.pdf
Why not ball bearings? Famous ball bearings work in bikes, cars, airplanes, wind turbines but not on RR cars riding on tracks. Owing to the unrecognized taper that makes it possible for trains with a fixed axle and flange to go around curves.
Timkin pioneered the roller bearing solution, but it was a bit more upfront expensive, but saved money in the long run from fewer hot boxes, fires, and derailments. And no bearing can survive without grease and maintenance.
The N&S CEO Alan Shaw smugly laughed off the need for simple heat sensors; y'know IR infra-red 'guns' for $19.95 at Home Depot.
Corporations that enjoy huge profits from stock-buybacks are oblivious to the concept of "the long run."

Also oblivious to the details you described about the simple physics. It's just "below" them to consider such things.

(82,849 posts)In the absence of affirmative steps to prevent or minimize derailments, it's reasonable to conclude that the CEO did indeed want the train to derail. I am content to let him show otherwise, if he can.
Botany
(70,501 posts)The axial on one of the cars was way overheated and the warning system on the train
did not notify the train's crew about the overheating until just before the derailing. N & S
might have to cut off the CEO for cosmetic reasons but he will be fine with millions and
millions of dollars.
This, as with most any other corporation, was calculated by their risk management dept. Cut regular maintenance, repairs, personnel, upgrades and hold onto all that capital. Should an accident occur, the payouts for cleanup and reparations, by their calculations, should be less than what it would have cost to perform those safety related tasks. That's why they delay or avoid them altogether. Bigger dividends, happier shareholders, all's well in their world. They don't give a shit about that town or any other. Ever! And it will happen again and again.
People like Alan Shaw belong in prison. They are a clear and present danger to society.

(10,163 posts)This is how corporate capitalism works. It's not about doing a good job or making the best product, it's about making profit.
Sooooo, to do that, the corporation hires the fewest people possible, pays the lowest wages government lets them, hires the cruelest managers available, uses the cheapest equipment and supplies possible, does the least amount they can get away with and charge the highest price the government will allow.
A recipe for incompetence and cruelty.
Amazing how much information can be found inside a nutshell.

(70,501 posts)W/out a doubt but it will never happen. In 2004 Ken Blackwell OH's Sec. of State allowed massive cheating
in OH so w would get a 2nd term and nothing happened to him and to this day he is well taken care of. I
worked that election and it was way dirty and for months I kept thinking when are they going to arrest him
and it was a big ass nothing. And when a Federal Judge order that the County B.O.E.s turn over their polling
logs those B.O.E. just tore up or pitched those logs although 2 women from Cuyahoga County got 2 years in
prison for rigging the 2004 recount and the judge told them that they were no doubt the only people involved
but they appealed the ruling to a Republican judge and he kicked them free. Look what that P. O. S. Governor
of New Jersey walked away on. I have long given up hope about seeing justice done.

(2,059 posts)He's the lightning rod for the backlash over the derailment.
Once he's used up, he'll bail out with his golden parachute and the board will appoint a new CEO to replace him.
It's the board and the shareholders that deserve the "attention".
NJCher
(35,662 posts)But in addition, keep in mind he is socially disgraced. He's damaged goods. His golden parachute has a price.
Brings to mind the words of Richard Jewel: "Where do I go to get my reputation back."

(24,467 posts)Then force the operators to have the proper safety and staffing on their trains that use these rails. Can't count on private businesses to work in the public's best interests. Train wrecks are part of their cost of doing business and provide write offs to cover their profits. And you can just imagine how their accountants will inflate the costs that they will incur.
