MSNBC's Donny Deutsch believes Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis won't look as appealing to voters as some Republicans think.
The Florida Republican is widely seen as Donald Trump's strongest challenger for the GOP nomination, but the "Morning Joe" contributor said his personality flaws are just too glaring to win over voters outside the conservative base.

(1,154 posts)Ok, it's obvious to anyone w/a brain that they are both dangerous maniacs of the first order. The ONLY chance the republicans have in future election cycles is if Trump drops dead. Something they are fervently hoping for.
DeFascist has no appeal outside their rabid mouth breathing base, so on a national level, he is going nowhere fast.
Personally I'm waiting for the republican party to devolve to rump status national as it has done here in California.

(9,988 posts)In Florida, one of his biggest support groups is Moms for Liberty. They claimed to be just a small grass-roots organization, but they seem to have some serious money behind them as theyve spread across the country. They have claimed to have 195 chapters in 37 states and nearly 100,000 members.
Their vehicle for stirring up anger and hatred of minorities is parental rightscorrectly interpreted as rights for white parents to censor school curricula with no rights for other parents. It is little more than a white supremacy group with homophobia thrown in.
They have some serious GOP cash behind them. The link below is to an interesting article that describes their founders a their tactics for harassing local school boards and teachers.

(11,738 posts)I always throw up a bit in my mouth when I have to point out that distinction, but I think it is accurate.
As much as I completely detest Trump and see no charisma there, when you put yourself in the shoes of the average Conservative voter today, you can't really argue that Trump has no charisma to them.
As stated in the article, DeSantis has the same cruel streak that Trump has, but he is more whiny and prickly. He comes off more as a closeted wife beater then the "thug/gangsta" that Trump portrays.
I think both Trump and DeSantis are "coward bullies". They are both very thin skinned and cannot take what they dish out. However, Trump has the WWE persona. He is the "lovable heel" that you may recognize if you ever watched Wrestling when you were a kid. I mean, the guy even came out and DID WWE crap. DeSantis cannot sell that image. He is popular in a state that is pretty much under the control of the GOP with a very weak Democratic Party. He got laughed out of California and New York though, where Trump at least drew crowds.
Trump isn't less flawed, but he is more viable in more places than DeSantis is, at least for now. Getting indicted will undoubtedly take more of the shine off. People may end up going with DeSantis if Trump is charged and actually convicted of the crimes he committed, but they will not be very enthusiastic about DeSantis. He does not have the reach of Trump.

(39,374 posts)Trump is needy and, if youre warped, entertaining. Like it or not, his crowd finds him amusing. The next ad-libbed joke DeSantis cracks will be the first of his life.
Also, whereas Trump feeds off the crowd DeSantis is a cold fish who gives the impression of preferring to be anywhere else than talking to those same rubes.

(4,298 posts)They just don't like it when POC commit crime.
Think who the heroes are or were: Al Capone, Billy the Kid, Jesse James, all things mafia, the Bundys, Jim and Tammy, Trump, Nixon,
the Watergate plumbers. Americans especially love crimes against their own government for good or evil, right or left. Now their love affair with tyrants is showing through.

(11,738 posts)I agree with what you said. There is definitely a fascination with "the outlaw", if that outlaw is White. They "buck the system" and "win one for the little guy", when in reality, they also kill a bunch of "little guys" and exploit the rest.
Republicans/Conservatives say they are about "law and order" but that only applies to POC and "degenerates".

(36,464 posts)DeSantis is a bore. Yeah, he says all the right shit, but that's not the same as working a crowd. Trump has some other advantages, as well. For one, out of shape as he is, DeSantis is a weird looking guy & also not the most fit. Personally, I always think of Rumpelstiltskin when I see him.
