Woody Guthries family to Josh Hawley: Stop using his lyrics, insurrectionist - KansasCityStarBut the family of one of Americas most revered folk singers wasnt exactly thrilled.
Nora Guthrie, Woodys daughter, said its not uncommon for politicians to make use of This Land is Your Land because the song advocates for democratic representation. She said she didnt mind the song being used politically, as long as it aligns with the songs values.
In this particular case, the co-opting or parodying of the lyric by those not aligned with Woodys lyrics - i.e. misrepresentation by autocrats, racists, white nationalists, anti-labor, insurrectionists, etc. - is not condoned, Guthrie wrote in an email. We do not consider Josh Hawley in any way a representative of Woodys values therefore we would never endorse or approve of his reference to Woodys lyrics.

(3,979 posts)given the video of his jaunt through the Capitol when insurrectionists were attacking, his theme should be "take it easy" with the lyrics "runnin' down the road tryin' to loosen my load."

It's much like all the "MLK would have supported" this or that reich-wing bullhonkey, despite him having been a socialist radical.

(14,160 posts)I think the reciprocity idea, if somehow implemented, would leave worthwhile people with skills and talent open to exploitation by nobodies with nothing, like Hawley.
