Right-to-work remains on a clear path to being overturned in the Michigan Legislature, but was delayed when the Senate swapped out previously passed House legislation with its own version Tuesday, March 14.
Back in January, House and Senate Democrats each introduced two versions of bills with the goal of repealing Michigans decade-old right-to-work laws one for the private sector and one for the public sector. The pair of House bills were poised to get Senate approval Tuesday after passing the House last week, until the Senate bill for workers in the private sector was taken up instead.
Bill sponsor Sen. Darrin Camilleri, D-Trenton, said theres still room for negotiations with his House colleagues to ensure the best versions cross the finish line and the chambers are able to share the victory once that happens.
In a split legislature, even with people of the same party, weve got to make sure that were sharing the same love and support because so many people have been working on these bills for such a long time, Camilleri said....
A last-minute substitute saw a $75,000 appropriation added to the bill that would be used for implementation and education about the law changes, similar to the right-to-work repeal bills. It will now head to the House for consideration as well.

(19,066 posts)It makes it harder to repeal next session if Reps take control. Democrats in Michigan are using Republicans' own tactics against them.
Reps had control of both houses in the state legislature for years, they refused to even listen to Democrats and just passed Right Wing law after Right Wing law while they also had the governor's mansion. Now they are crying that Dems are moving forward with their agenda. Let them cry.

(19,066 posts)I cannot describe how elated I am with what Democrats accomplished here. It was a total take over.
In 2016 Trump won Michigan, we had near super majorities for Republicans in both state houses, the SoS and the AG were Republicans, the state Supreme Court was majority Republican, and Reps had an 8-6 advantage in US House reps.
It all started with a Republican in the state Supreme Court bucking her party and allowing non partisan redistricting to get onto the ballot. And now, Dems hold every major office, have an advantage on the Supreme Court, control both houses of the state legislature, and we sent Dems to Washington at a 7-6 advantage. We also have both US Senators from Michigan.
And we did all of this while legalizing recreational marijuana, expanding voting rights and enshrining that in the state constitution, and repealing a 1931 abortion ban and enshrining the right to abortion care into the state constitution.
Dems have complete control here and are going to deliver big for the working class.
