Its because their ideas are not supported by the majority of Americans. Republicans cannot win free and fair elections so they gerrymander districts, pass restrictive voter laws and cheat any way they can.
They hate the democratic processes because they are a minority of voters. Putin supports Republicans for this reason as it destabilizes the United States.
If it werent so infuriating it would be pathetic

Most Dem candidates know this, and understand that they must get a big margin
to overcome the GOP attempts to steal elections.

1. New England businessmen and tradesmen (read "smugglers" but that's a different argument
2. Wealthy Southern landowners (read "slaveholders" )
We've been trying to deal with the compromises those guys came up with since then, with mixed success and a lot of "two steps forward, one step back" actions over the decades.
The Senate is heavily gerrymandered to provide small, agrarian states inordinate power. The presidential election is thus also gerrymandered through the Electoral College. The Constitution barely mentions popular vote elections, and purposely isolates the presidential electoral vote from true democratic processes.
