PA-HD163: Special election to fill soon-to-be vacant Pa. House seat to coincide with May 16 primary
The 203-member Pennsylvania House of Representatives will be down a second member as of Thursday when embattled Delaware County Democratic Rep. Mike Zabel resigns amid accusations of sexual harassment.
A spokeswoman for House Speaker Joanna McClinton, D-Philadelphia, said on Monday the speaker intends to call for a special election to be held on May 16 to coincide with the primary to fill the 163rd legislative district seat Zabel held since 2019.
That is the soonest that the special election to fill that seat could be called.
May 16 is also the date McClinton previously chose for the special election to fill the open 108th legislative district seat representing Northumberland County that Republican Sen. Lynda Schlegel Culver held since 2011. She resigned on Feb. 28 after winning a state Senate seat.
The winners of those House races will serve out the remainder of Zabel and Schlegel Culvers terms of office which expire on Nov. 30, 2024.
