Where were all the pearl clutchers when Senator John Edwards was charged and tried for six felonies when he misrepresented hush money payments to his paramour to protect his presidential campaign?

(47,477 posts)Former presidential candidate John Edwards was accused of funneling nearly $1 million in donor contributions to support his pregnant mistress and criminally charged with a campaign finance violation. Here's how the case played out.
John Edwards was charged with campaign finance violations in 2011 related to his 2008 presidential run.
He was accused by the DOJ of funneling nearly $1 million in donations to his pregnant mistress.
Edwards was acquitted of one campaign finance violation charge the others were dropped.

(3,469 posts)Lots of Magats running around saying this would never happen to a Democrat!!! to which I always reply, tell that to John Edwards.
That clarifies things a bit. I think it was the wording. I'm used to seeing something worded like that when calling out other Duers, and it just wasn't clicking. Thanks!

(3,492 posts)Nor was he known for egging his supporters on to commit crimes against the government.
But such things should have absolutely no bearing on whether or not justice should be served.

(51,308 posts)His wife Elizabeth, who once was a member here, was dying of cancer while Edwards merrily traveled the campaign trail with his mistress, with whom he even had a baby.
He lied and lied and lied about it.
Unbelievably, it was the National Enquirer who caught him essentially in the act. He STILL denied it after that, if I remember correctly.
It was a sordid, horrid mess, and I cannot begin to imagine what Elizabeth endured.

(51,308 posts)I don't remember what happened.
I tried to put that way in the rear-view mirror, but I was never one of his fans.
I remember the swooning here over him and Elizabeth. Boy, that changed quickly. What a sordid mess.

No punishment for the rich and powerful.

(51,308 posts)I think all but one charge was dismissed, and I don't remember if he was convicted in that one.
Sadly, I doubt these charges will stick either.

(3,469 posts)If I remember correctly, the main witness was Edwards own fixer who flipped on him.

What a slime ball the author was, and I'll just keep my opinion of Edwards to myself.

He was also the one who wrote the book during all that. Pond scum!
